Default whats this thing for please ?

Hey, BangGood is trying to convince me that I need one of these.

    https://www.banggood.com/100PPR-6-Te...r_warehouse=CN

Am not sure what its for and am curious.

If you turn the handle it sends a signal to your cnc machine and then it moves something by the same amount as you turn the handle ? Electronic version of the dials on my cross slide and compound slide ?

    Bill

    Hi Bill,

It is a dial encoder ! It generates a pulse train of square waves, the direction of which depends upon which way you move the dial.
It works in exactly the same way as the mouse on your computer.

In fact if you took your mouse apart, you will see two slotted wheels, one for X and one for Y. The dial encoder only uses one of these wheels to produce the pulse train.

If you were really inventive you could actually make one yourself using the mouse bits.

Hi Baron, did you know that your mouse would now be an antique

    Hi Shed, Bill, Guys,

I just realised what you said Yes you are right, I am still using a ball mouse.
I'll have to go and pinch the wife's ! She has a nice pink optical one that she uses with her laptop.

If you don't hear from me again...

You will know that she has killed me
    Best Regards:
