    Default Lathe chuck back plate

Hi there, I am purchasing a new chuck for my metal lathe, I will have to make a new back plate, is there any reason why it can't be made from aluminium( I have some good aluminium stock) instead of cast or steel, which I don't have any off, has anyone made one from aluminium or think of any reason why it can't be done, I would appreciate any ideas or advice.
    Regards
    Nick

No reason why it can't be done , it will work.
Reasons why it shouldn't be done, it is soft, will mark and bruise easily,if it is a threaded back plate the threads may get damaged by screwing on/off the rear register face may wear quite quickly if it is put on and off often.

A while ago I bought some cast iron backplate castings (as cast, unfinished) that I’m never going to use, I think they are 200 OD but I’ll have to check. PM me if you think one of those would be useful.

    Hi Guys,

Small bar bell weights from the scrap yard are a good source of cast iron for this purpose. I have a couple of 2kg ones stashed away, about 150 mm X 25 mm thick at the rim and centre. They would probably give about 12 or 13 mm thickness when the lettering has been skimmed off. The hub is nearly 65 mm diameter, so should provide plenty of meat for the register.
