    Default Yet Another Swiss Chuck

When I was in Melbourne I had to deal with my daughter's car. Initially a flat battery that we managed to unflatten courtesy of a housemate's borrowed ex-boyfriend's car and homemade jumper leads loaned from one of the old Italian blokes up the street. After a few minutes running the motor transformed itself from a four to a three cylinder. Beck had had the car repaired previously and relatively inexpensively at a backyard workshop in East Brunswick called simply John Garage. So after a few frantic phone calls we chugged off to John Street. Turned out that one of the Nissan's coils had let go.

The workshop has been there since 1950 and I commented that the 30 ton press, a Servex, was similar to my friend Piers' Servex. Beck told Jimmy, the bloke running the shop, that I liked old machines so Jimmy invited us out the back to have a look at an old Pommie lathe that they use to use when mechanic's were able and expected to repair things. Turned out not to be English but a Queenslander, a six inch screwcutting Mars. There was stuff everywhere but on the sagging shelf behind the lathe was a drill chuck. I said to Beck that the chuck's knurling had a real Swiss look to it. Scratching the decades of accumulated grit and grease from the chuck's body revealed the name Christen, the manufacturer of some truly exquisite Swiss machinery.

The chuck looked virtually identical to my recently acquired Erlach adding weight to the suggestion that Erlach was one of the original suppliers to Bergeon, Schaublin and it would seem, Christen.
