I'd agree with a swivel base being useless - If I want something at an angle, I use the rotary table. Or just bolt the vice on crooked. If you can't get the right angle out of the T-slots, make a fixture plate to suit - lower profile, better rigidity then the average swivel base. The only reason I'd buy a vice specifically with a swivel base is if I had some other build project I could incorporate it into...

I don't know, I use the swivel base quite a lot for the quick set up, non precision jobs (that would be more than half the jobs I do on the mill).
I do also remove the base and use the vice without it when the need arises.
The swivel base is handy to have, but you don't have to use it all the time.Regards

Well I just ordered one of these https://www.ausee.com.au/shop/item.aspx?itemid=4198
They have a Fathers day promotion of free postage that ends on Sunday.
This comoany apparently has a connection with ARC tools in the UK. Of the few write ups I found, these vices are supposed to be ok for th emoney. Time will tell I guess.
I found a few reviews on the Vertex vices today and in a few of them the buyer had to pull the vice apart to fix minor things when they first got it. So I'll keep everyone posted.

Hi Bollie,
I had a good look at a vise like the one in the link, the handle was a really sloppy fit on the nut !Best Regards:

Yeah looks to be good value, let us know how you go with it. I will probably end up with the 100mm version of this https://www.ausee.com.au/shop/category.aspx?catid=8403 I was in contact with them today asking for a better price if I did pickup, they said if 5 or more where to be purchased they would take 10% off the price.

Goodonya BaronJ. You could have waited until Sunday night to reveal that. Now I'll stress all weekend worrying if I've done my money. hahahaha.
No - just joking. Its all good. At the end of the day I can't really expect a Mercedes at a Lada price. In reality it would have to be really bad to be worse than what I currenly have that I can use.
Haveaniceweekend.

Update on the vice.
The new vice arrived on thursday.
First impressions are - Engrish instructions are good for a laugh. I have included a pic of the first page. well worth reading
The vice itself - reasonable quality for the money. It appears to be finished ok. There's a couple of casting flashes that could have been removed before painting but they dont effect the performance. Purely cosmetic.
The hammer finish paint is nice and neat.
The jaws have a bit of a sharp edge where they have been ground but a couple of minutes with a fine stone should fix that.
It came with 2 keys and screws to attach to the underside for alignment on the machine table. It has two sets of keyways at 90 deg to each other. I didn't measure the keys but they are too small for my BP clone.
Baron J was correct about the handle. It is a sloppy fit on the shaft. The female hex in the handle is pretty rough but its certainly useable. The hex on the spindle (12mmAF) and appears to be very close to size. I didnt measure it, but my 40 year old , well used Sidchrome 12mm socket is a very neat fit.
There is about 80 deg of backlash in the screw. I haven't looked closely enough at that yet to tell if its in the thread, the thrust washer assembly or a bit of both.
There is no mark on the base of the vice to line up with the graduations on the swivel base but thats no biggy as most people (myself included) will probably only rarely use the swivel base.
I made up some T bolts earlier this evening and clamped the vice to the mill table. Set upa dial guage reading off the top of the moving jaw and clamped up a bit of 5/8" HSS. The dial guage needle moved maybe half the width of the needle. Also tried the same on each end of the moving jaw with the same result. Thats good enough for my purposes and infinately better than what I have been using.
I have yet to use the vice but so far its looking good. Time will tell. Keep in mind it only cost $132 with free freight.

The Chinglish leaves a bit to be desired, I couldn't make heads or tails of it

Hi Bollie, Guys,
I like the bit that basically says, don't hit it with a hammer, you will break itBest Regards:

I went into their warehouse in Dandenong the other day and had a look at one of the 'versatile' vices; I was interested in the 160mm as I stated earlier. The young chap running the show was quite helpful. I expect the vice is accurately ground but the finish just did not yell quality. In the end I decided that I will save my coin until I can afford the vice I really want. Might buy a toolmaker vice from them though.
