    Default Countersunk socket head screws

went to order some UNC 5/16 CS sh screws and asked for a countersink as well..yep no problems they say.

I ask if its 82 degree...countersales says no its 90? they didnt know that UNC was 82 until I pointed him to unbrako page..never been asked for one..records show they have never sold one... how can they sell UNC CS SH screws and have no idea..this is reputable nuts n bolts outlet. What have all others customers been doing when they buy UNC CS? even > than 20mm metric changes to some other obscure angle..60?

what does every one else do?...any links to reasonably priced 82...
best I could source from non online wanted a kidney as well as my wallet.

If you have the room in the material can you just counter sink deeper to get the head below the surface, angle would not be correct but may work, otherwise grind a drill to suit.

    Hi Richard,

Cheap 82 degree countersinks are available but whether they are any good is another question - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2Pcs-1-2...0AAOSwubFaeXd-

A single Weldon bit may not be too prohibitively expensive if you have a Shipito account - https://www.ebay.com/itm/Weldon-CS-1...-/202135251705

    Bob.
I did question those too Bob...sound too cheap to be hss

can still get one from usa if I need to and it will still be cheaper than what General Tools and Teravin Tools here in adelaide quoted...both in excess of $95 with one being over the ton. I will keep looking.
to mod a drill and run the risk of totally stuffing it is not to my liking ...its about 19mm dia head in the cs screws

    Hi Eskimo,

I was lucky and got a set of weldon countersinks and deburring cutters cheap. However it is not dificult to regrind a three flute 90 degree countersink to 82 degrees with the lathe and tool post mounted Dremel. You could do the same with a twist drill if you wanted to.

Or how about a spade bit ? You would have to make a holder, but the replacement blades aren’t to expensive, and they are carbide.

A Weldon countersink to do 20mm ain’t going to be cheap.
    Best Regards:
    Baron J.

Would a 'D' bit cope with the job? Easy to make with a lathe and mill.

A reground drill would almost certainly chatter anyway if my experience doing this is typical.

Mind you that's not *necessarily* bad - the chatter marks make it harder for the CSK head to back out.....
