There must have been a few models of the GMF BG, I have an oldish one I bought in 1976, it didn't have the table securing post through the base though.

McPherson's 1960 catalogue shows the round motor housing as per China's photo.

Bob,
Thank you for the scan from the McPhersons catalogue.
The grinder with the Douglas attachment looks exactly like mine (which is an 8") except for the switch which on mine has a pressed metal shelter over it with GMF embossed in it. Otherwise all the small details are identical so I am supposing my grinder is from around that period. The serial number is F54555 which might give an indication of date too.

Today I stripped this apart and took everything but the casting with the stator in it to be sandblasted. The original green paint seems to be a good match for rustkill mid brunswick green which suits me.

IMG_20180822_085154.jpgI cleaned the thick black paint of the plate it seems that the low areas of this plate where filled with red except around the GMF logo which was black. Unfortunately that wasn't saveable and the poor grinder will have to make do with a brass plate.

Just thinking 1/2HP might be a bit light for 8" wheels and may work better with 6"?
FWIW here are my two 1HP 8" GMFs (before I tidied up the wiring)
The gold one now has a green wheel on the RHS shaft.

That brace of grinders looks very pretty.
I have no idea how good 1/2hp will be on the grinder as I didn't use it before I pulled it apart. Now its too advanced to stop until its finished.
I picked up the bits from the sandblaster but ran out of primer before I finished coating them today. Hopefully i will have some new bearings tomorrow.

Hi lamestllama,
If your GMF is like all the other GMF bench grinders I have encountered in my time spent in educational training institutions, it will be nothing less than brilliant.
They are certainly far better than anything readily available today.
The fact that the machine will spin on for some minutes after shut down is an indicator of how well they were designed and manufactured. If there is a better class of bench grinder available here in Oz ,well, I am yet to encounter it. To me GMF grinders are the Rolls Royce of the industry.

IMG_20180824_153556.jpgSome progress. Epoxy primer then epoxy filler over the places with voids in the castings.

Eric
Thanks for that. That is actually not much different from the green enamel I painted mine with back in the late 1970's. I must have fluked it at the time as I only used some green paint that my Dad had.
