Default Parting off with small lathe

I have a project which involves parting a piece of 60 mm stainless steel, my metal lathe is a small item AL 50g ( 9x20 )I did this several years ago and used a hacksaw NEVER AGAIN, I am going the parting off method this time. several people have said I would not be able to do this on such a small lathe.Well me being me I am going to do it anyway, I know to have it on on dead center, plus parallel to the work and to go slow anything else I should be aware of.

60mm stainless is a bit of an ask
If your lathe can run in reverse, you might try putting the tool in upside down, I have found that works pretty well.
Also your chance of success may depend on the type of parting tool. There are parting tools and there are parting tools.

Stainless commonly work hardens, so you need a decent rate of feed. On a small lathe that could be an ask. It also needs to be kept as cool as possible, so some form of coolant is a must.

    Hi China,

Good luck ! Even in mild steel a 30 mm stick out on a relatively thin blade is a big ask.

Good luck, cos you will need it.

This is what will do it dead easy. A friction disc will cut it like a piece of cheese:

I don't know if your lathe has an automated, crossfeed.
If it has not, you must hand feed at a constant rate.
I part off up to 25 diameter 304 on a regular basis. For that, I use a 20mmx 3 HSS. The taper from top to bottom type.

I use the sulphurised lube that is very thick. It helps to stop the lube being spun off.

That sizing is the absolute limit on my 12x 36 as the toolpost flexes.

I wish you good luck. Do wear your safety glasses, as I feel you may need them.

Good point about the safety glasses Grahaeme.

Parting off and using HSS drills on the lathe always makes me nervous. HSS can literally grenade under duress and I've had a large splinter of drill bit stick well into my forearm (through my heavy work shirt) on one occasion. Same thing with the drill press. When that stuff goes bang, it's not good.

    Play safe guys.

The most significant thing that has improved my parting off ability has been to use "T" shaped cross section parting tools.

That's what I would have done.
    Quicker, easier and less stress.
