How to avoid tool runout with ER collet
Hi,
I've recently bought a HM47 mill, and I'm quite new to machining. I'm having trouble with end mill runout in ER32 collet chucks. I've bought 2 different chucks and 2 different brands (cheapish) or collet chucks, but I still struggle with excessive runout. I've checked the spindle runout (0.02mm), and the chuck internal taper (also 0.02mm). As soon as I assemble the tool in the holder I end up with varying amount of runout, up to a visable wobble exceeding the limit of my test indicator. My understanding with collets was that it was a repeatable way of work or tool holding with minimal runout. I must be missing something?
Any help appreciated

Do you know how to insert the collet into the nut?

Welcome to a Top Forum, where in Tasmania are you? We have members all over the place, so hopefully, one living close by may come around and have a look.
Have you cleaned inside the holder to make sure no dirt is there, and have you tried another collet?
Any chance of a few pics please, as that could tell us what's going wrong for you? Close ups of the collet, collet inserted with no nut and collet inserted with nut, should be able assist.

When you put the collet in the nut and hold the nut with the thread facing the ground does the collet stay or fall out,if it falls out it is not seated correctly in the nut.
If it doesn't fall out that's good, check to see how far you are inserting your tool into the collet, the further the better but I would suggest at least halfway, if not the tool may not be sitting square in the collet ( this is unlikely though ).

Hi Guys,
See video:

This applies to all ER collets.
Best Regards:
Baron J.

Check the slots in the collets for crap/poor finish. This will do exactly what you are experiencing.
It's a lottery buying any collet gear that is not to a DIN standard (stated runout). The worst that can happen is you will fail.
But at least you tried.

Check that the collet is clean, eg no swarf and that there is no burrs left from when they were slit at the factory
Check that your using the correct collet, eg ER32 collet in ER32 holder and correct size collet, remember most will collapse but should NEVER be expanded. ( A 10mm collet will hold a 9.5mm shaft but should never be used for a 10.5mm shaft)
Make sure you insert the collet into the nut first, the top of the collet should normally be sitting flush with the top of the nut. From there you can either put the tool in the collet and then spin it onto the chuck, or you can put the collet and nut onto the chuck a few turns then put the tool in and tighten.
Probably much more info than you need to know but HAAS did a tip of the day video where they talk all about ER collet systems

Thanks for the replies. I'm in Launceston.
I have cleaned inside the tapered surfaces of the chuck, collet and nut several times. Tried 2 different chucks, 2 collet nuts and about 4 different collets (of varying sizes). I've attached some photos as suggested.
Thank you.

Looks okay to me, I would want to see the run out of the chuck taper with the drawbar really reefed tight but no collet in just in case you spindle is doing a banana under tension.

Knowing the sizes of the run outs you have measured with different chucks and collets etc may be useful - there may be a systematic pattern amongst all those measurements but without the data we are really just guessing
When you say some run outs exceed the limit of the indicator, what is the limit?
Have you tried systematically rotating the collet to different positions in the chuck and measuring the run out?
I assume you are measuring using a milling cutter of some kind - are you sure that is not bent?
Also you might find this useful if you haven't read it

Did the machine come with any Morse Taper tooling or do you have any other tooling apart from the collet chucks, if you do are they also running out similar to the collets.
You may of just been lucky enough to purchase two sets of dicky collets from different suppliers.

Gawd, look at the machine marks in the first picture on the collet chuck spanner flats. LOL. That's hardly confidence inspiring.
Hold the collets up to the light and look through each slot for crud etc.The worst that can happen is you will fail.
But at least you tried.

Just how tight is the ER nut, and how are you tightening it?
The ER collet system is good.
Cheers
