What oil for air compressor?
I'm planning to do an oil change on the compressor tomorrow as it has been quite some time since the last one was done.
Was just wondering if hydraulic oil would be suitable as I have a drum of Shell Telsus ISO 68 sitting around. If not what is recommended?
Thanks

In my neck of the woods the compressor is lucky to get a roof over its head let alone graded oil with no water or black bits in it!

What is the compressor and what does your compressor manual say.
Compressor oil for standard reciprocating piston pump compressors is usually ISO100 or 150
68 is usually used in screw compressor type pumps

It is just your average Chinese piston type. 16cfm/3hp motor. I will look into other oils if the 68 is not heavy enough.

SAE 30, the same oil as you put in a Briggs & Stratton lawn mower engine.

Hi Guys,
I just use the same 5 - 40 sae that I put in the car. The manual makes no mention of the oil other than for the sight glass.Best Regards:

As others have said, officially it’s probably iso 100. I run iso 150 in mine which is as per the manufacturers specs - pilot k50.
FYI - ISO oils have a claimed viscosity at 40c whilst engine oils are at 100c.

I had never heard of using ISO 100 in small air comps so l had a bit of a search and learned something new, thanks fella's.
Evereywhere i have worked, for 45 yrs, all recipricating comps were serviced with SAE30.
The reason for using SAE30 engine oil is because it is a non detergent oil.
This you toob clip explains why you need to use non detergent oil in your comp. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4XTss11zs58#

I might just buy the proper stuff, only real reason I didn't want to buy it as I have too much oil sitting around. Now to find somewhere that stocks ISO 100 and then decide if I should buy 1lt or 5lts of it. hmm.

SAE30 is the proper oil, or if you want you can use ISO 100.
It wont matter either will do.

My 7.5 CFM Swedish BIAB has the oil viscosity requirement on the data plate : SAE 10.
All I have ever done in the 45 years I've owned it from new is top up with Dexron 3 ATF (which is approx SAE 15). Still runs like new and uses very little. Oil is still perfectly clean and clear with no sign of water emulsion.
No mention of what type of oil to use. ATF is high detergent oil and even though true compressor oil is low detergent, I asked our refrigeration guy at work what to use and he said just put in some ATF. So i did
Edit: I just found this article which backs up what he said: https://www.machinerylubrication.com...compressor-oilThe worst that can happen is you will fail.
But at least you tried.

I dont suppose that you realise that it is a LOT colder in Sweden.
Machinery, and car engines run lower viscosity lubricants in colder climates.
