Mag Drill-What to get?
Hey guys, Now that I’ve got a newer crane truck, the old ACCO crane truck is dormant, in fact crane has been stripped and it’s just a basic tray with a gap behind the cab now.
Anyway, I’ve picked up an airbag suspension for it and the plan is to now shorten it, fit the airbag suspension and a 4.5mt tipper body on it. Tipper body will be built and fitted by a third party.
In the meantime, I need to fit new suspension under instruction from an engineer who specialises in heavy equipment.
So I’m in the market for a mag drill to drill all the new mounting holes for the suspension.
Hafco has this one which looks ok

Another I’m considering is the Holemaker 35

Anyone here had any experiences with either or any others that you might throw in the mix. It won’t be used in an industrial situation, just for my own use.Cheers

We have the same holemaker at work. It gets thrashed by the boilys and never dies. That model is really good for drilling chassis rails.

Where I help out, we have the hole maker also, noisy but works a treat drilling 14mm diam holes in 50mm thick bar. It's mainly used for drilling holes in situ for tipper ram mounts.

Another vote for the holemaker. I used one extensively when working for a body builder and even the bosses two sons (who were by far the roughest pair on tools I have ever met bar none!) could only semi kill it - a few simple repairs and away it went again.
On another note, why do you want to put airbags under your truck? For a tipper I can't see them offering much in the way of positive benefits if it's a single axle and they are decidedly inferior traction wise on a tandem. Lot's of paperwork to keep it legal under VSB6 as well (still need a new blue plate if you shorten the wheelbase, but nowhere near as bad as shortening the wheelbase and modifying the suspension).

Thanks guys
Looks like I’ll be buying the holemaker.
I was led to believe that it’s better load capacity and a smoother ride but haven’t fully investigated this yet. Plus I got the suspension for nothing, it’s all still on the chassis, truck it came from was in a smash, front end written off.
But after what you’ve said, I just might stick with the original setup and just move it up and shorten chassis, as you’ve said less hassle with paper work.Cheers

What make is the new crane truck? Just asking, as if it's not an Acco, you might have to change you name?

Very funny Kryn
But the Acco isn’t leaving my stable so no need to change usernames.
Newer truck is an 06 Isuzu Fvr 950
Here’s a pic from when I first bought it parked next to the old girl.

I think the only load capacity you will gain will be the difference in weight between airbag and spring suspension (bags are definitely lighter). Newer trucks can get 16.5GVM on a single axle if they have airbag rear and FUPS, but I'm not sure that your ACCO would qualify. What you would lose is stability when spreading gravel and even when tipping normally unless you dump the bags prior. If it were me, I would plumb your tipping controls so they automatically dump the bags as soon as the pto is engaged or the hoist is raised. Seen a few trailers and a couple of trucks go over due to not dumping bags first.
Have you had a new crane certification done since swapping it to the Isuzu and changed your rego details?

I see. I thought you may have swapped cranes from the ACCO to the Suzy.
I like springs for a tipper myself. You could probably sell the airbag setup without too much trouble I reckon as they are a good option for those carting sensitive freight.
