    I have seen that document before and while it did interest me at the time and it's not beyond me to build but it would still take me some time to get up to speed and the last thing I need ATM is another time consuming sideline project.
    I'm pretty certain that building this sort of a controller is well outside the abilities of most folks on these forums.
    If I could buy a completed board for the price of a VFD I might consider it for some applications.
    There is a video on Youtube showing control of the same walking machine DC motor, PS and electronics as the one I have but I have not pursued it as they do not get around the auto-reset problem.

    Think I’m going to need a smaller vice.


    Are the holes in the side of these for hold downs? What kind?



    Needs some T nuts so I can make some T nuts. Doh! Egg Horizontal Mill Issues before the Horizontal Mill Issues chicken!

    The holes in the sides of that small vice are for repositioning the front jaw as that jaw only has limited movement between each position.

    I had similar vice issues and ended up buying this $50 Indian vice from a AUS supplier - I'm pretty happy with it so far.

    I thought I was going to have to get something smaller like that small vice you show above and I probably will get something like that sometime but so far I haven't needed it.

    Plenty of options for getting your vice clamped to make some nuts, but how about a couple of coach bolts - the style with the rounded mushroom shaped head and the square at the top of the shank. They give you a wider head than a standard bolt and easy to grind the side off a bit to fit your slots.

    Side holes was my understanding, but I've never had one myself.
    AFAIK the holes are drilled through from one side to the other, and underneath the moving jaw they are milled out to half depth and become detents for the jaw clamp to sit in.
    Some vices have them just left as holes in the side, others have a slot milled along so you can use a conventional clamp.

    My table is only 4 3/4” wide how does that compare to yours and do you think the vise will fit?

    Table slots are 3/8. for 5/16 stud.

    My table is 5 3/16" wide but only has 2 slots so with your 3 slots you have greater choice of positioning so vice will easily fit.
    Vice base is also rotatable which provides more flexibility.
    Base can also be removed for more head room.

    Small vices are good for small objects but larger the workpieces with deeper cuts need to be held as tightly as possible which is why I went for a bigger vice with a crank handle and decent size screw as this will have greater torque than something that is tightened with a smaller hex cap screw

    Table slots are 3/8. for 5/16 stud.
    Mine used a 7/16" (11.11mm) slot for 3/8" stud so I can use the M8 H&F clamp set but I still intend making more size specific T-nuts so I can use 3/8 bolts.

    I usually don’t buy new things due to budget but that vice seems good value and affordable so I might get it. Thanks for the heads up.

    Default Horizontal Mill Issues

    Little vice showed up today.
    The jaws aren’t perfectly aligned. One day when I have the space to drag the surface grinder out and finish it I’ll be able to touch that up.


    Spent half the day on the phone and driving around trying to find some 3/8 T Bolts ended up filling down some I had.


    This will be my first job and is needed to be Down ASAP.


    Tops and bottoms to be milled flat and parallel on 24 Anvils.

    I'm glad you like it.

    You should consider shortening the hold down bolts or you won't be able to rotate the vice through 90º.

    One thing I did notice on my vise they haven’t stamped the alignment mark on the vise base to line up with the angle marks on the swivel base.

    Same on mine - there's probably too much movement in the base to be sure about where to locate it it.

    Have you done a jaw tension eveness check? Put a parallel with a width that is the full height of the jaws vertically in between the jaws, ie so that an even amount of the parallel pokes out either side. Close the jaws until you just start to feel resistance in being able lift the parallel on one side, check the other side. Tight a whisker hard and check both sides again, repeat until you cannot move - the resistance should be approx the same on both sides.

    BTW how did you manage to use 5/8 bolts in your slots - I though they were 3/8?

    I’ve corrected that it is 3/8 slot.

    No I haven’t done that test but I will later.
