    Default Surface Plate Question

    Hi all,

Im looking to finally pull the trigger on a granite surface plate. I have a busget of around $1200 and so far the biggest i can get for that coin is a 630x630x100 grade 00 with stand delivered to Dandenong from Sydney.

That gives me a diagonal of around 890mm which is ok but still limits me for some of the longer stuff.

Ideally a 600 x 900 would really make me happy.

Ive done a reasonable search for price and availability so i think its probably the best size for the price and grade. Second hand comes up from time to time but never when i have the cash waiting!!

Anyone seen any better deals or similar deal for a 900mm plate?

Hare and forbes have a plate for around the 1K mark (less when they have a special) but they are slightly smaller at 600x600. Thats about 850mm diagonal.

All I would say buying an import plate, do you have a way to check the grade? Can you get a bigger plate in your budget if you drop down to 0? its still wayyyyyyy flatter than we are capable of working to in a non temperature controlled environment anyway. Like I said in another thread a while ago, Used CMM table might be a good option, youll need to call around though,

A coordinate measuring machine (CMM) is a device that measures the geometry of physical objects by sensing discrete points on the surface of the object with a probe. Various types of probes are used in CMMs, including mechanical, optical, laser, and white light.
I think this is what CMM is refered to.

Fair enough. Why would i want one of those instead of a surface plate?

The table is a giant surface plate that might be cheaper than a new one

Sorry I should have been clearer, coordinate measuring machines are often scrapped as tgeir very specialised control software becomes obsolete fast but the hardware is still fine. That's how I got my 1000x600 table for $100. Has nice fixturing points too.

Thanks. Is there a specific search i do for one of those, as in a term or word?

Im not sure. I just assumed a 00 grade was ideal for hand scrapeing. Also the bigger the plate the larger the deviation for each specific grade.

    Hi Simon
You could try Hi-Tech metrology in Melbourne
I brought a ex CMM plate from them for cheap. Also picked up a right angle granite plate while I was there ( think 3 ft wide x 3 ft long x 3ft high)
Worth a call ( they also have new plates )

    Cheers

    Mark

Does anyone in SA live close to Gepps Cross?

There is a 2100x750x250 SP there. It has threaded brass inserts which i dont know much about and the seller (S/H dealer) cannot tell me much about it.

If its ok to use for scrapeing then im willing to skull drag it back on a Bunnings trailer. I estimate it much weigh about a tonne.
