Simon I got my plate, 900x600 or so from Robinson International for around 1k delivered to Brisbane. But I think they were eager to sell it.

There is a 2100x750x250 SP there. It has threaded brass inserts which i dont know much about and the seller (S/H dealer) cannot tell me much about it.

If its ok to use for scrapeing then im willing to skull drag it back on a Bunnings trailer. I estimate it much weigh about a tonne.

    Hi Simon,

I can have a look for you, take some pictures and a general assessment of what it looks like. Other than that I'm not sure what else you would want?

I've seen a couple like that over the last few months in Adelaide. Latest auction was Precision Components and the other one was a business related to defence. Either way if it was from either of them I would expect it to be reasonable.

If you would like any assistance let me know.

...... forgot to add. Some of the items I've seen from that dealer have been reasonably priced as opposed to others who are not negotiable and you see things sitting there forever.

    Thanks Spiro.

I have been given the names of a few other suppliers which i will follow up tomorrow. Im thinking this plate maybe a backup plan. Thinking of its physical size and weight, getting it to my place is half the challenge, the other half is getting it in my shed, building a stand and mounting it on the stand.

If i was to consider this plate further then id be keen to know the general condition of the surface and if any specification plate was visible and if so what was witten on it.

But for now ill make some phone calls tomorrow to some of the above mentioned suppliers.

    Cheers.

A rock that big could be supported on three legs. We had a 4000 x 2000 x 400 approximately and all it had underneath were three 200mm pipes with a steel disc welded to each end and an extra disc on the floor. The disk welded to the bottom had three bolts threaded into it to bear against the disc on the floor for levelling the surface plate. The weight of the rock kept it from moving ever. You could do the same with a few braces around the bottom to keep them from moving with your lighter plate.

Yeah I went down this road....

I also priced one from China which came in at about $1000 delivery + $480 for the plate itself. This was for a 1m by 1m plate.

Marcus Christensen on this site (send him a message) got his from some mob on the gold coast and there pricing was:
    1000x750 - $1500
    Part No. Grade Price + GST1600 x 1000 x 180 o $2,319.00 1600 x 1000 x 180 oo $2,565.00 Stand to suit the two above $710.00 2000 x 1000 x 220 o $2,760.00 2000 x 1500 x 250 o $6,627.00 Set of 5 jacks to suit the 2 above $1,846.00

FYI. This was a little while ago. I was going to go with the GC mob, to avoid the shipping risk from China, but then Robinson turned up a nice amount cheaper.

Yea thanks. I re-read the email regarding the pricing of $1200 delivered for a 630x630 Grade 00 and it turns out its from Robinson Int. so same place you got yours. So I figured I'd send him another email requesting a price for a 900x630 and it came back at $2250 plus GST. However, he also said that his supplier made a mistake and did not idividually label the plates and he has two plates with two certificates but has no way of matching the plates to the certificates. Inlue of this he has offered my the plate , stand and delivery for $1733 plus GST. That's a great price but still a bit out of my price range.

    It's another option though.

If you don't need a surface calibrated to the highest standard, but just something fairly flat, visit your local monumental stone mason. They have to polish those headstones very flat as people don't want ripples.

And if you want some smaller plates, check out the scrap heap (ask first).

I needs to be pretty flat since i want to use it to hand scrape machine surfaces flat.

While a standard piece of granite from a hearth or headstone may look flat and have no ripples, there is nothing stopping it from being slightly curved. Curved enough to be of little use for my intended needs.

Unfortunately there is no getting around the fact i need a surface plate to do that.

Simon, if you have a camel back straight edge and a set of feeler gauges, you could soon tell if it wasn't up to your standard.

Have you tried Redmond Gary? Thats where the prices I had above came from.

For me it was either hare and forbes for 900 for a 600x600, redmond gary for a big plate for 1500, China for a 1mx1m for 1500 and nothing in between. Then I got lucky....
If you can stretch the budget I'd get one like Marcus's from RG for 3k, I think his is 2.5mx1m or something. Then you can do everything you need.
edit - or bite the bullet and pay 1500 for a moderate size from RG. Only an extra 300 really.

I don't reckon either of those Gumtree items have enough legs supporting the slabs. I hate to think what they weigh! I note vendors says 'pickup available'. Pick up ?????

Well the first one would weigh just over a tonne, using the density of black granite being 2750kg/m^3

Thats doable on a tandem trailer with a forklift etc.

The second one, ignoring that stand would weigh just shy of 3 tonne. So transportation for that starts to get a little more complicated and a bit more expensive than just hiring a bunnings tandem trailer.
