wanted: observations & comments on an old line shaft horizontal mill
Hi all,
Forever on the sniff for the next next (next) project - I first saw this about 2 years ago and saw it again recently still sitting there. I am considering buying it. Polite ask: if you know where it is please don't shout it out here. )
My horizontal mill knowledge it pretty light so I am after some of your observations and comments about this unit. It has no makers mark that I could see, just a McPhersons importers badge:

Some things I do get:
* the table swivels - nice.
* the table is driven. Also nice.
* it has no motor so will need something made to run it.
* it has no arbor - I've no idea what taper or whatever suits it.
Some things I don't get:
* man that table is a long way from the spindle - can the table really go all the way up there?
* the arbor 'over arm' has two 'eyes' either side of the arbor hole - what are they for?
Please offer any comments or observations you may have - you know more than I do! )
Thoughts?
Greg.

Its most likely to be a brown and sharpe taper in the arbor, not super easy to get tooling for especially if it isnt number 9 (the most common)
The two eyes in the overarm are for a support that would join to the knee or base.
Universal table is a plus.
Get ready to make a heap of tooling.

A rectangular hole in the spindle?
Missing the drive shaft to the table, hopefully it has a fast traverse return, on my old horizontal you have to wind it back by hand
after each cut.
Looks like a good little project for you stray, I would guess that it has a multiple stage screw jack under the table.

caskwarrior. Cheers. Good info. )
Shed. It did have a kind of rectangular slot at the front of the spindle housing.
Re multi-stage screw jack. Ahhhhhh ....
Re 'Missing the drive shaft to the table'' ... ok. I guess that would come from the 3 way box on the RHS to the table. Okay. Cheers. I didn't see anything that looked like an obvious 'something should go here' missing thing - but what you say makes sense.

Hi Greg, If I didn't know better, I'd have said it was mine, albeit a later model. It has flick type levers on the side which mine hasn't. Sorry i haven't any pics of it, as I can't get to it ATM. I do have a few pics of it from the seller,

//metalworkforums.com/attachmen...6&d=1517905623
//metalworkforums.com/attachmen...2&d=1517905398
This came with it too, //metalworkforums.com/attachmen...3&d=1517905481
I did get a Vertical head with mine, it runs off a seperate motor. The spindle bore is a Number 3 Morse taper, with a 1" shaft, and various sized spacers. Can get a pic if you want need of it?
Can't really tell you much more about it, mainly coz I still haven't got it set up, as I'm half way throught a shed extension.
Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks Kryn,
Very similar indeed aren't they. I see you yours has a backgear (?). I didn't look at what the lever did on the RHS up near the spindle on this one did - it might be a back gear I guess.
That motor mount is not very discrete is it. )
Thanks re spindle bore.

That mount is a right royal pain in the butt, where I wanted put the mill is in the corner of the shed, trouble is the lift up door takes up a lot of any available height that I have.
Will get a pic tomorrow of the spindle for you.

Thanks Kryn, no rush - I don't actually have the machine as yet (and am in the 'speculation' phase so it may never happen. )
