My Secondhand Lathe
Hi All,
I have just purchased a small secondhand lathe. The problem is I do not know the makers or model number. Thier are no name plates on it and I suspect it has been painted at some point in its life, Everything seems to work it has an old Service washing machine motor with it (1 hp). I am asuming thier should be some drive gear mechanizm this has been lost at some point. Does anyone know who made it and its model number.
Thank You in advance

I think you are correct, a Mk2 missing the backgear and screwcutting stuff though. At this point its a big watchmakers lathe really.
Best of luck and welcome to the forum.

Hi All
I emailed [email protected] and he also agrees that this is a early Lineker and Winfield mk2 and sugests a simperthetic restore and trying to obtain the backgear and thread cuting gear for it.
So I have stripped the tailstock and cleaned years of dirt of the parts although I beleave this tail stock may have come from a different lathe. The reason I say this is the guide and securing T bolt seem to be home made the two guides are bolts tha have been filed down on two edges and seem to throw of tail stock out by a few thou. The securing T bolt is a piece of black mild steel drilled and taped with a 10mm piece of stud and a nut. The question is should I respray the tail stock body and wheel or leave them as they are?.
Here are some photo's prior to cleaning.

Hi All and thank you for the replies. I have a question on lead screws? "my lathe is fitted with a 1/2" 8 TPI Acme Threaded NO taper left hand thread" which is no longer made the lead screw is worn and the nut is very badly worn. The closest I can seem to find is a 1/2" 10 TPI or a 12mm 10 tpi with a new lead nut. So am I right in thinking that the 10 TPI would move the cross slide carriage 1/10th of and inch. Where having measured the travel on the 8 TPI this moves the carriage 1/8th of an inch. As I have to find some gears for it would it make a differance?
Kind Regards

Hello Mark,
Welcome to the forums.
When I first saw your pictures, I thought "Myford ML1" ! But I do agree you have pinned it down as a Lineker and Winfield lathe.
Your assumptions about the leadscrew are correct, though if you want to keep it as original as possible I'm sure that you can get 1/2" 8 TPI LH Acme Threaded rod, you might also find that a machinable bronze nut is available from the same source.
Try EKP Engineering here in the UK. I've found them to be very helpful.
Staying with 8TPI might also help when it comes to choosing suitable gears.Best Regards:
