    Default Metalmaster AL330A Owners

I took a bit of a risk this week and sold my LAM 350B and bought a (not running) 2002 Hafco AL330A, I can pick it up next week, the owner says it just needs a new fwd/rev switch.

It looks like it has sat unused for a while.

I'd like to hear from anyone who has used this model, what's your opinion of it?

I could also do with a pic of the spindle speed chart, the one on this lathe has rubbed off

While it is not a Hafco AL330A, I think it may be close.

I would like the tool post to be more rigid. I am about to remove the coil lead screw spring cover. It does not fold back in itself under auto feed and acts as a solid block, stopping the feed travel 60 short and has bent the drive spindle that drives off the geared rack. I have replaced two of the B*******S. Yours appears to never have been fitted or removed.
I have not used auto feed and have a new spindle to fit when the lathe is moved to the shed to enble better access.

A pic for lathe to lathe comparison and one of the spindle chart. Note top rpm is position A 2 - 1810 rpms

    Does it help you?

    Grahame

    Thanks Grahame,
it's a big help knowing what issues to look out for, I will make sure to check the the X axis power feed.

I think I did OK replacing the LAM 350B for the Hafco,
this machine should be a bit more versatile than the old belt drive unit, overall it's an improvement.

    Hi NedsHead

If yours needs a new switch this may be of interest to you
    //metalworkforums.com/f309/t199...ev-switch-hz5b

You should be able to find an online Manual for the machine, I would take a pic of the speeds on mine but it now lives at a mates place, you should find the speeds in the manual.

I did some pretty decent cuts on it, for a small lathe they are not bad. I'd suggest spending the time to remove the compound & cross slide. Clean, lube and adjust everything. This includes the 3 jaw chuck.

The hardest part can be finding decent tooling as your limited to a 12mm tool height. If you go carbide please don't buy one of the rubbish kits that use strange inserts. A couple of decent tool holders will serve you much better than heaps of average ones.

Feel free to sing out if you get stuck otherwise have fun.

That's exactly what I need, thanks.

I did some searching for a manual and the closest I could find is for an AL340, probably near enough though. by the looks of the pic, the feed chart has also rubbed off.

The whole thing looks like it needs a good going over before I run it, what adjustments should I make?

I noticed it had a tool holder with a thin shank in the tool post, if I'm lucky it'll come with some basic tooling to get me started.

I'll check the part number on the cam switch and work on getting a replacement, you might be hearing from me when it comes time to install it.

    Cheers

Check that the tailstock does not fall off when you move it. Looks like it may not be fastened down as the clamp is sitting loose on the tray.

Dump the oil out of the headstock and saddle and refill with new stuff BEFORE you fire it up.

Will do Simonl, I take it there's a drain plug somewhere under the headstock?

Yes. If you take the rear cover off to expose the change gears, its underneath there.

    Default D1-4 Camlock

    Is the Hafco AL330A a D1-4 camlock?

Yes they are a standard D1-4 camlock
If you look up the specs for D1-4 I think the pin diameter is enough to confirm but they should be D1-4

The Hafco AL-330A is in fact a CQ6230A lathe, made by Shaoxing Tongli Machine Tool Co., Zhejiang Province, China.

Once you know it is the CQ6230A, you will find lots more about it. There is (still?) a Yahoo groups called something like "12x36 lathes" where a lot of owners talk about them.

I'll put up the manual later on today.

Here it was in the 2004 Hare and Forbes catalogue:

The CQ6230A was sold in the US as the Grizzly G4002/4003 lathe.

Here is the link to manual for their version (different motor voltage, mind):

And here's the CQ6230A operator's manual, the one which originally came packaged with my 2002 build Hafco AL330A

    https://archive.org/details/CQ6230AManual

There's also a 30 or so page booklet called 'Parts list' with all the exploded assembly diagrams and parts schedules, very useful, but I'll have to scan that at a later time.

    Thanks Gunnaduit,

I'm picking the lathe up on Thursday, I bought a D1-4 ER40 collet chuck and a set of collets and I'm itching to get it home and try them out.

What do you think of your AL330A? If they're anything like the AL336 I've been using at the local men's shed I'll be happy with it
