Kin Shin Metal lathe instructions
The Hall Men's Shed has had a Kin Shin Metal Lathe KS-3.5fk donated. We need instructions for this lathe in order to operate the lathe properly particularly in turning threads.

Hi gmoss
Welcome to the MetalWork Forum.
You will find us a helpful bunch with people with knowledge and experience on lathes.
I can tell you up front many of the Asian manuals do not give instruction on setting up the lathe.
Basically, they just give a name to the components, supply an exploded view and a parts list if you are lucky.
The information to cut threads will lay in books like Text Book of Turning by Hercus or The Amateurs lathe by L.H. Spary.
I did the google thing and found the other names the same lathe was made under, including companies like Grizzly Machinery and Forbes / Hare and Forbes - now Machinery House.
This particular model lathe has been made under many names, apparently.
I googled Kin Shin Metal Lathe KS-3.5fk and it leads me to this link:
Taiwanese Lathes by Brazier's Lantaine, Enco, Wey II Corp, Warco, Peerless, Kin Shin, carolina with Models: 1122, 1124, 1224, 1236, 1340 & 1327 Lathes
Scroll down the page and see if you can recognize your lathe from the photos.
Take some photos of your lathe and give us as much info as you can supply and some of the guys here will be able to sort you out as far as single point thread cutting.
Please! good clear pics of the :
1. The quick change gearbox. Under, but to the left of the chuck, the thing with 2 levers, and holes for the pins on the levers.
2. The information grid plates with numbers and letters in the grid boxes. Good clear pics so the info in the grid boxes can be read.
Some of our blokes- who know much more about lathes than I, shall be along soon to advise you. These pics will help the guys to help you.
I shall PM some links that will assist you to use our forums and navigate around the different sections.
Welcome again,
Grahame

Hi,
This looks like it, but as I have said there is no thread cutting instruction, in this manual.
It is branded REX-Cut, but I am pretty sure it is the same lathe.
I think you will need to join Hobby Machinists - it is free - to gain downloading permission.

Hi Grahame,
I joined the hobby machinists, but when I followed your link there was a message that I do not have authority to access that site. Also I could not find a search button but probably missed it.

Hi Graham
Sometimes they can take a day or so to acknowledge or activate your membership and until that happens you won't have access to their downloads.
From what I could tell from the UK lathes link, the Kin Shin is a dead spit of all the others on that particular page.
Same Pattern, different paint and badging. If you PM your email address to me, I will try to send you a copy. The manual is a PDF file and I have no experience in sending one, so anything could happen.
I any case, the copy is a scan of a photocopy of a photocopy and washed out in places. There was no information contained in this manual about cutting threads.
This is the UK lathes link to the Kin Shin model and others
Taiwanese Lathes by Brazier's Lantaine, Enco, Wey II Corp, Warco, Peerless, Kin Shin, carolina with Models: 1122, 1124, 1224, 1236, 1340 & 1327 Lathes
Below is the pic from the scroll down of the page at UK lathes. Hopefully, it is the same as yours. Some of our experience lathe blokes will login eventually to give you a better guide than I can.
Another thing,is that the guys will need to know what you know about threads ,pitches diameters. It can be difficult assisting someone from scratch, as it were, if they don't have a grasp of the basic principles surrounding threads.
If you don't have any knowledge of lathes and threads some good info can be picked up on Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_lathe
As an aside, regarding the pic of the lathe. There is no way I would lift the lathe like that with the sling around the chuck.
Also, I noticed there does not seem to be an emergency stop button. That would be a good thing to have fitted.
Anyway, let us know if this is the lathe.

Are you chasing information on how to cut a screw thread or how to set the quick change gear box and change gears?

We have been using the lathe for basic turning particularly for vehicle restoration. Below is a link to the Hall Collectors ACT site showing some of the work we have been doing
https://hallcollectors.weebly.com/members-vehicles.html
One of the guys is part of a clock restoration group and had been been doing basic turning for parts. He now needs to be able to cut a screw thread for some clocks.
Thanks for your help

Hi Graham. I just sent you a PM - I live nearby and would be happy to come out and take a look at your lathe and walk you through the thread cutting process. Ray if you could send me that PDF too I would appreciate it.

The OP has issues sorted by now, I think.
I happened on this link and thought it may have useful info for other owners of KINSHIN and generic lathes.

Hi guys, it's been a while, thanks Grahame for linking my lathe pics, is good to know what I have done can some times help some body else, and I can't believe my lathe is even listed in the lathes.co.uk site, I feel all fuzzy inside
I have been going through my records and found a 63 page manual of this lathe branded Jet it is very poor quality scan , it has a parts list as well, but if it helps I can post the PDF if allowed here? or email it to whom ever wants it,
and also the usual Lantaine brand manual from the net that everybody refers to,
Cheers,
Richard.

Hi dano,
As far as a couple of us in Admin have been able to determine even distributing the copy could be a copyright infringement as we had a similar issue that cropped up a just few days back.
I haven't elected myself forum policeman but at the same time I do have a duty of care in a way to ensure no members set themselves up for any legal unpleasantness. It all in the Terms of Use- which many have not even bothered to read as yet.
Speaking to membership in general, each person is responsible for what they post. Read the TOU it spells it out very clearly.
I don't think there are a lot of those members looking for this manual. I have sent the generic one on to a couple of people but that particular manual is just a glorified parts list.
My understanding is that members with the particular lathe are looking for is the how to instructional material pertaining to the lathe.
Should yours have some instructions on various lathe functions it would be welcome to them.
Perhaps a PM might be handy. If that does not work I would be willing to pass it it to a few members via my Gmail if privately emailed to me. That way it is out sight and doesn't attract too much attention.
Dano watch for PM PLEASE
Regards
Grahame
