Does Anyone Use Circular Indexable Inserts?
Before I waste money I thought it might be worth finding out if others use these inserts and how they regard them. Given their increased cutting surface I wonder whether they will function adequately if used on my 2 horsepower mill. Cheap endmills are readily available in one or two cutter configurations.

I use that type of insert in a 50 taper 20hp machining centre at work. Mainly use them for roughing, the large corner radius really helps with tool life.
I'm not sure how well they would work on a smaller mill, but at that price they would be worth a try, we pay more than that per insert at work.

I find them useful on the lathe (14 x 40) from time to time, haven't tried them on the mill.

G,morning Bob,
Yes I've used them. They are quite good for long surfaces, like a shaft or as I tried in my earlier days, on a fly cutter. After which I went with the disc type and a small HSS tool bit. Easy to make tool holders for the lathe using them as its simply a flat bottomed recess with a tapped hole through the middle. I've got a couple of different types of insert, but don't have a clue what they are, since I have had them given to me. I don't use them much, preferring HSS to carbide. I really should have a play with them some moreBest Regards:

Thank you for the replies Ashley, Bob and John.
Given their price I'll take a punt.

I used them for finishing passes on tough material. Round HSS also works well on plastics.

Years and years ago I got talked into buying a Iscar chamill face mill. It could take four different shaped cutters. I found the round ones were the best for metal removal.

Tom,
I use CCGT inserts mounted in a cut down boring bar for fly cutting with my boring head. I can only use two corners of the insert. These round inserts could prove to be a pretty economical alternative. I just dropped the grand total of twenty bucks for a pack of ten smaller RPMT08 inserts and a single insert 12mm end mill. It will be interesting to see how well they perform.

That looks like a bargain. I might have to look into round cutters too.
SimonGirl, I don't wanna know about your mild-mannered alter ego or anything like that." I mean, you tell me you're, uh, super-mega-ultra-lightning babe? That's all right with me. I'm good. I'm good.
