Help needed from any Bridgeport owners
Hi all.
On and off im slowly putting together my Pacific FTV-2 milling machine. Parts are still readily available from Lagun (US name of same mill) but for some reason the prices are much higher than the equivalent price and part of a Bridgeport machine.
One such part i have previously repaired to some degree of success is a part called the Clutch Handle Support. It had one tab broken off which i fashioned a repair on however, in a lapse of concentration on removing said part, i snapped off the remaining tab. This has now been the catalyst for a complete replacement of this part. I am reasonably confident i can measure and machine a new part but it will be very time consuming. A new replacement part would be hundreds of $ and so out of the question in terms of justification.
However, the equivalent part for a Bridgeport is $US33. Question is, are they interchangeable parts?
Would anyone with a bridgeport be interested in me sending the part to them and do a comparison. Not expecting anyone to take their mill apart but it should be pretty easy to establish if they are dimensionally similar and worth a purchase.
Naturally i will pay postage each way.
Cheers.
Simon

Whereabouts in Melbourne are you Simon? I have a Bridgeport series 1 J-head in bits in my shed, that part is in primer. I commute between home near Drouin and work near Dandenong. Perhaps we could cross paths and I could arrange to have the part with me. If that won't work, I would be more than happy to receive, compare and return your part.

Thanks for the fast replies.
Hi Jack. A quick measure shows that they very similar but not exact. Most of the external measurements are probably not that critical other than the two shaft sizes (which are the same) and the relative distances between the two. One thing that i did measure as being a bit off that may not be compatible is the bolt hole spacing. I measured the inner distance and the outer distance which gives me an average of 41.1mm separation which is smaller than yours.
Bridgeport maybe different again!
Hi Pete. I live in Bittern (Near Hastings on morington peninsula)
I could make my way to Dandenong on a pre arranged time/day.
Cheers.

Simon, I think it might be difficult to meet up given your location; how about if I take the same measurements that Jackaroo has and get back to you with them. Unfortunately I won't be able to do this until Friday though. If it seems close but we're not certain, then it would probably be easier to post it to me for comparison.

Pete, you beat me to it. )
Simon, I am pulling down a series 1 2j2 head this week - started last night. The parts should be the same as Pete's but depending on whether Pete's is a 1hp or a 1.5/2hp the top bits are different.
At any rate, if I can help somehow, let me know. I'm in St Kilda area.
Greg.

Simon's part arrived in the mail today. Unfortunately, although the two look like the same part at a glance, I was able to establish that the Pacific part differs from the Bridgeport part in almost every dimension.
Photo shows my jottings- excuse the 'clone' tag, I couldn't recall what the mill was! Measuring the distance between the centre-lines of the two shafts was difficult as they are on different axes but they differ by about 80 thou. The cross shaft from the BP actually fits nicely in the bore of the Pacific part although the BP bore is bigger- might just be wear- but the location of the bore in relation to everything else is different.

Thanks heaps Pete.
So every cloud has a silver lining. While I cant take the easy road by simply puchasing the equivalent bridgeport part for about $40, i now look forward to making the part from scratch. Initially when Michael suggested this, i was overwhelmed by that idea. However when you look at the critical components and critical dimensions its not all thaf bad. Much of the external shape is asthetic and near enough should be fine.
Ill post the updates in the thread on the mill in projects.
Cheers
