Engine swap in a forklift.
I have a V50 Caterpillar forklift which has a petrol motor which is now going to have a diesel engine transplant.
I have never liked petrol engines in any industrial equipment as far as long term reliability goes.
Just manage to locate a Perkins 4-236 which is a runner , it is fitted to a hydraulic pump and controls for powering a screening plant .
I am going to look it over and if its ok the old engine will be scrapped and this diesel fitted.
It wont be a problem as this machine is old school ,no computers to generate problems.
This one could even be turbo charged at a later date to make it a bit more grunty.

Where I'm working now we have the Fork Safe system which requires you to log onto the fork with your own ID card, start the fork in the required sequence and answer a questionnaire every 20 or so starts of the fork. It also tracks your speeds, loads and any impacts. Every now and then, the whole system stops working and the fork won't start, so you have to call out the maintenance company.

I remember a while ago looking at an older Clarke with a 186 and a holden two speed auto in it, it hasn't had a hard life at all but the torque converter had blown up like a balloon and would transmit no power at all.
Although we also have a Toyota 4 tonne and its currently on 4600 hours with its original corona motor and basically no maintainence.

No but I understand why companies install such things. It protects them from the foreseeable consequences of forklift drivers who are really too stupid to breathe but somehow manage it anyway. The implementation of stricter liability laws for supervisors and company management is going to make this trend even worse. Nobody wants to face a fine of $50K or worse because an employee is an idiot who won't follow safety rules.
I suggest the next version have a breathalyser linked to the start system as well, followed by a drug detection system for opiates, coca derivatives and amphetamines ASAP.
We drift afield. I'd like a cheap functional forklift so maybe some will come onto the market for home use if this continues. LPG would be just fine for me.

The whole point of a license of ANY kind is a means to demonstrate your qualification of competence with a particular piece of machinery or type of vehicle. The whole premise of that "questionaire" is that they have no faith or trust in their employees who hold that ticket.
Surely an annual test of some description would achieve the same outcome but with far less pain and less productivity loss?
like that gives OH&S a really bad name and takes it to the extreme.
SimonGirl, I don't wanna know about your mild-mannered alter ego or anything like that." I mean, you tell me you're, uh, super-mega-ultra-lightning babe? That's all right with me. I'm good. I'm good.

Fellas, We are getting a thread drift here.
In this thread we have gone from swapping donks in a forklift to drug and alcohol testing in the workplace.
Please place any further posts about drug and alcohol effects upon industry etc, to the " OF TOPIC " Forum, or I will do it for you.
The rest of you, please continue your discussion about swapping fork lift engines.
I have some views on this D&A subject too, but shall post them in OFF TOPIC.
Got it?

I have just returned from three 18 hour days on a site with a five hour drive each way , so havent had a chance to arrange to pick the power pack up.
Maybe next week end.

Simple don't employ people , do the work yourself and if that is not good enough , let the naysayers do the jobs themselves and laugh when it all goes tits up.
I have done a similar procedure in the past , the bell housing was fabricated and made to enable easier servicing of driveline.
