unknown vise
Hi,
got this 6" vise this week as a freebie, but can not find any brand identification or marking on it. The body is extended down at the front to form a couple of hooks for butting against the front of the bench.
Anyone hazard a guess as to its origin?

Hi node105,
I'll take a guess then! Back in the day when the TAFE's taught practical foundry work this vice could well have been a practice/ term test piece.
Departments, such as fitting turning and welding fabrication often worked together making bits and pieces for each other, as in the spindle /nut and handle. Mind, I did not see vices in particular, but have seen enough of other TAFE made exam items to suggest this was indeed possible. This was in the late sixties when I was attending TAFE as an apprentice.
I do like the vice and would love to see more pics in the case you may have intentions of refurbishing the vice

thanks Graham, that sounds plausible. The vice came from an estate where the old chap had a mechanic's workshop at home for donkey's years; pit, gantry, lathe, 6ft hydraulic trolley jack 3 phase compressor , 3 phase rider, welding...
I thought the brass spindle nut was a bit curious too. I will dissemble and clean it up and see if there might be some initials letter punched under the (?) filler and paint. Seems like a heck of a casting though even for a TAFE apprentice.
thanks for the guess )
I am disinclined to move it on, despite two other 6"Dawns, and others.

When you decide to "move it on" please let me know, as I wouldn't mind a cast vise.
I was going to say that it could be from the war, but with the bog filler, I doubt that being the case.
I have an Arnold touch up gun, minus the pot if you want it?
