For my next project I will be making one of these, with a couple of modifications of course!

I bought a Turnado today. Fitting it was straightforward. I have a slotted cross-slide on my Hercus 260 and I elected to use the slots to mount the base plate. I turned up a tip for a pen out of stainless Damascus. The lack of back rake on the cutting bit makes cutting very controlled. You would have to push very hard to get the bit to dig in (might be different on brass).
The table clears the ER40 collet nut, but the foot of the tool holder doesn't. To turn the back side of a piece requites an ER32 or smaller collet chuck. Gary sells specially made ER32 collet extenders with a smooth nut to help prevent the removal of flesh. I'm impressed with this tool and I think it will be getting a lot of use.Chris

Will do. I bought the Damasteel from a mob in the USA since I was going there and the cheap postage made it worthwhile. I paid $250 for a 500mm length of 11mm diameter round bar.

Here's the tip on my prototype pen after etching in hot HCl. It looks great in the pic, but in the flesh the pattern is difficult to see unless it's pointed out to you. Damasteel's recommended method of staining the layers with Ferric Chloride doesn't work. The pattern looks great when you remove it from the etch, but the black wipes off easily. I think I'm going to heat blue the next batch after etching then lightly polish to remove the bluing from the high spots.

Thanks Bob. Are you getting much use out of your Turnado? I believe you went all-out and got the tracer-arm too? The tracer looks great, but I'm waiting to see if I have a need for it before forking out the $198. I think I'll end up getting the ER32 collet chuck extender too. I hate the idea of having to buy another set of collets, but you lose a lot of capability not being able to get the base of the toolholder under the ER40 chuck.

I haven't touched the Turnado since I made the centring thingo Chris.
My plan at the time was to make up the tracer arm then proceed to the Acute kit. Typically for me, easier things get in the way and I think " I'll just get them out of the way then I'll tackle the Eccentric kits. " I'm still fooling around with the easy stuff!!

I know the feeling Bob. But for me it's more difficult things that get in the way (i.e.home maintenance).

Chris,
Those pen tips look great. What tool material did you use, or does it come with the Turnado? I'm surprised that it cuts the presumably very hard Damasteel as drama free as you describe.

Graham,
It comes with a Sutton cobalt HSS tool. The Damasteel is made from layers of 304 and 316 so it cuts the same as stainless steel. I cut a taper on the tip first using the topslide at 12 degrees. The Turnado was used to remove the rest of the material. The tool bit has a large radius grind on the opposite end for smoothing. I removed the tool marks with a file and finished with various grits of wet and dry up to 2000.Chris

That's interesting Chris,
It was my understanding that due to the folding process damascus steel has layers of steel interspersed with layers of carbon or at least layers of higher carbon steel, which would be very hard and not machine very easily. But from what you describe it's no harder than the constituent metals. Maybe I'm wrongly assuming Damasteel and damascus steel are the same thing? I need to do some googling.
Graham.
