Next time you buy drills try HSS with 5% cobalt. The wife's son bought a set with split points for me when he was living in HK, I won't use anything else now. They never seem to need sharpening, haven't had to sharpen one since the drills arrived.

Maybe because you don't use them. All BS aside, the ones with the added Cobalt are an excellent choice.

The worst that can happen is you will fail.
    But at least you tried.

Those imperiaks are hard to get hold of it seems, and I'm not sure how well they work, but has anyone here tried drills anything like these, https://adelaidetools.com.au/bordo-2...t-2015-m3.html ?
According to the blurb, they are supposed to outperform split point drills, but sharpening them would appear to be a challenge.

I bought a short set from Aldi with similar points, they perform well. No idea how to re-grind them though.

That low price for the HSS split points is great.

If you have the need for high production sped there is no contest. There is no advantage for a home DIY guy who drills maybe once a fortnight.

The other factor is that I must be able to sharpen my own drill.

I could not justify the tool and cutter grinder required for such drills.

I have a Tormek wet grinder but it requires a $300 plus jig for drill bit sharpening of split points.
