Thanks for all the replies, I'm going with the ATF on the mill as its an all metal pump and plumbing system.

Next questions, what does ATF do to plastics.
I see it's sold in HDPE containers so it has to be OK for that but what about other plastics.

On the lathe I use a water feature pump. I think the body of the Pump is ABS.On the bandsaw the tank is PVC and the pump impeller and body could be nylon or PP.

    BobL,
I fitted a fish tank pump on my band saw and it uses the same ATF as my other machines been running for years with no problems.

Do you run a central cooling system feeding all your machines?

No each machine has its own system.

    krisfarm,
How long does the ATF last? Does it have to be replaced at all? Is there any loss that needs to be topped up?
Sorry about all the questions but I'm quite interested in using it. I set up a coolant system for my lathe a while back, but have never been quite game to start using it with any of the soluble oils.

I haven't used it but I imagine there are quite a few factors that determine top-up/replacement
    - evaporation is low to non-existant so would not be a problems.
    - some will be lost to smoke production.
    - some oil will alway be flung off and not caught by drip trays etc so it will just depend how careful you are, what speeds you use, and what guards you have in place etc
    - some oil will be taken away on hands, work pieces and work tools.
    - I imagine if you use a lot of other oils eg way oils, these will eventually contaminate the ATF but complete replacement will be years away unless you are a pro shop.

So top up will be required but as evaporation is not a significant factor I would imagine not much is needed.
I'm keen to go with STF manly because I hate cleaning out the soluble oil tanks.

    Hi Alan,
BobL has covered most of the answers to your questions, I find you also loose some from the swarf you create, I usually leave the swarf in the tray overnight to let it drain.
