Thread: Help needed in reversing direction of a DC motor

Hi Simon, will the motor & pump take pulleys - you could sit them side by side and thus achieve the direction of tvl you want?

I had thought about a pulley or a gear system. If any I think it would have to be geared as I think the bearings on the pump are only designed for axial loads and not side or radial loads that would be generated with a pulley setup. It's certainly more work than I'm prepared to do.

Simon l know that you like a chalenge but l have some starter motors from ride mower engines, they turn anti clockwise but will run either way.
If one will suit and if you want one l will photo them and you can take your pick.

Out of interest, is there any reason for the 12 volt motor? How were you powering the this motor before?

Have you considered single phase AC motors or treadmill DC motors?

Thanks Shed. I will keep that offer in mind. I will exhaust all avenues with this motor first.

Hey VC the reason i want to keep the 12v motor is because i will be using the hydraulic pump to drive a small ram that will be a log lifter for my hydraulic log splitter.

Im not sure ab induction motor would work too well with this particular pump because the motor only runs when you actually extend or retract the ram as opposed to a regular type setup where the motor and pump run continuously and circulating fluid in byepass until a spool valve is pressed.

As such the motor in this setup needs alot of start torque. I think an induction motor may stall if it starts under a load. An AC universal motor from a washing machine would be a better match in terms of running it from 240V.

Sounds like a perfect match for a starter motor - maybe a geared one. If you got one from a modern Subaru or similar that's designed to stop and start at traffic lights, they are designed for a surprisingly good duty cycle....

Stand by everyone. I am going to try rotate the brushes. I'm back at work now so I will not be able to do much more for a couple of days. I will report my results then.

Success. I finally got around to trying some changes on this motor. My idea ended up working. I rotated the entire brush assembly by 90 degrees (for a 2 pole motor it would have been 180 degrees)

This required cutting and extending one of the brush wires to reach and drilling 3 new holes in the motor body.

Internal clearances between ground and 12v is a bit closer than before and if it was a 240v motor it would be potentially a safety issue but should get by on this occasion.
