Workzone Plasma Cutter
I see Aldi has a Workzone Plasma cutter coming up under Special Buys. Wondering if anyone has one and what they think of it.
I have a few Workzone items, all seem good quality.

Aldi is probably a great place for groceries. Not so much for hobby engineering tools.
I would respectfully suggest that the unit will most likely be a great disappointment in one way or another.
You will get what you pay for.

When is the Sale on? I could not find it, or the date, when I checked their website.

The Lottos and Rossi both have good reviews and are available on ebay. Couldn't find a review for the Workzone.

I've got a Rossi TIG, stick and plasma from ebay. Edison's is the seller. Great for the price and work well. The earth clamp and arc handle are a bit weak but easily replaced.

Four or five years ago there were a lot of generic low end plasmas being sold on line for around $200, they were called Cut 40 or similar. I bought one of them and its still going, but it gets used for an hour a month if that. I suspect the Aldi item will do what it says on the box and will last almost indefinitely on light duties. And if it poos itself after 6 weeks there is always the Aldi warranty.

I also have had a Rossi for a couple of years, can't fault the performance.

I 'have' a (very expensive at the time) Unimig cut40. It is arcing out on the circuit board and useless. A nice unit to use but consumables are expensive. I bought a Magnum cut 50 until I could get the Unimig repaired. The Magnum may not be as flash but never misses a beat and the repairs were never made. It uses cheaper generic consumables.

Lotos are cheaper than the Aldi machine and receive good reviews, so, probably a better buy. Given Toggy's review of the Cut 50, they appear to be a better buy also. The Cut 50s are all over ebay. starting at $228.

With apologies to those who have heard me rabbeting on about this before.
Like welders, plasma cutters (PC) also have a duty cycle.
A typical budget level 15A Mains powered PC has around about a 25% duty cycle at 50A, whereas a higher quality 15A mains PC will have 60% duty cycle at 50A.
Again, a DIY user may never ever need more than a 25% duty cycle, but what those duty cycles are indicative of is the quality and ruggedness of the internal components and it is this that allows a higher quality PC to last longer.
At the mens shed we pick up gear from various places like deceased estates and closing down workshops and have been given a number of budget level PCs and welders all that had problems of one sort or another that meant they could not be repaired or did not make them worth repairing. The only really quality related item was an 300A Kempi MIG from a boilermakers workshop than had closed down after the mining boom here in WA. It was pretty beat up and needed some TLC and the wire feed mechanism had to be repaired costing a couple of hundred $ - in the end we deemed it too big for the shed and we ended up selling it.

Most of them are 60%, the Loto is only 30 though. Pilot arc models are dearer, Edisons sell a Rossi, pilot arc, inverter, 40 amp for $389. Rossi also seem to get good reviews.

Just had a look at the Aldi catalogue, the plasma has a duty cycle of 15% which would have to be one of the lowest I've seen.
