Removing tables from HM52 mill
The Y axis on my Hafpos HM52 has suddenly decided to become almost impossibly stiff to wind back and forth. I can't see anything obvious, gib screws are still in place and tight, I'm thinking that chip has worked its way somewhere it shouldn't be so I'll remove the tables and investigate.
It shouldn't be too hard, start from the top and burrow down, but if someone can share a few words of wisdom it will be appreciated.

Hi Bob,
I struck the same on a HM52 at a school where I worked.
It had not been used for a while and it was found that the oiler was blocked -so no oil and the coolant had caused rust over the drive screw thread.
There was a hard crusty orange rusty patch on the thread.

Hi Bob
Undo the 4 nuts for the swivel, and the table and upper saddle will all come off together. There is a pivot spindle in there that is pressed into the lower saddle from memory.
Then you can get to the lower saddle where you will find the Allen head bolt for the Y axis nut. I'll grab some pictures for you.Using Tapatalk

While I was in there I extended the Y axis travel to around 280mm.
I made new sheet metal covers and added a millied block to the front. I also had to remove a little cast on the knee slot to allow the nut to come further forward.Using Tapatalk

Hi Dave,
Great to see you back posting again-I know you have been doing it for a while I have just been a bit slack. I remember when you did the total rebuild of your mill, fantastic workmanship, nice to see it again.
Regards Bob

That was straightforward but.....
I followed Dave J's suggestion and lifted the table and swivel off as one to expose the Y axis.

Removing the gib and sliding the Y axis well forward reveals swarf that has got past the wipers. I suspect the swarf was balling up and jamming the Y slide, the slide only has 2mm clearance over where the swarf is. This is a 10 year old mill so maybe that collection of swarf isn't too bad for that period of time. I cleaned everything and reassembled the Y slide and it all works as well as it used to.

BUT. From new, Y axis travel has always been a little stiff at the hand wheel end, I was hoping to solve that annoyance while sorting out the serious jamming. Making sure that the screw (28 x 4 trapezoidal) and nut were scrupulously clean I ran the nut on from the LH end and encountered resistance near the RH end, the hand wheel end. W T F? The screw is dead straight, all I can think is that the thread is out of spec at the end. Any thoughts or experience?
