Default New machine day - 1981 2hp Series 1 Bridgeport

    Hi all,

A new-to-me arrival. A non-working bridgy. I won it a fortnight ago at a Greys auction. It came home today. A shout out to the boys at PaulX crane trucks.

I got to inspect it before the auction and the spindle turned freely and, despite being filthy, seemed to be okay. A few obvious things to fix/replace - but worth a punt. A supervisor at the pickup site used to work in the toolroom were it lived and he said it needs a new belt. Said it broke about 12 months ago and they never fixed it. Cool, that stuff is available from the US. When operational and spruced up a little it'll be replacing my Herless knee mill from the same era.

I was pretty sure it was a US model, but it seems it was UK made but doesn't sport the usual 'adcock shipley' name on the ram. Here it is:

After a quick clean saddle ways appear to be in good nick:

Vertical no so good but such is life.

First question. I'd like to test the motor using the 2hp VFD that I have. The motor junction box looks like this:

All forum disclaimers apply, but how might one reconnect these guys to delta wire it?

    Hi Greg,

How much did that set you back?

    Hi Greg
That looks like a good project, I like that hercus power hacksaw in the background too.
Keep us updated with your progress.
    Cheers

First - I realised that re-wire question should go over in electrical - I'll repost there. It was a long day yesterday.

Pete - he heh .. that hacksaw look familiar eh!? ) It is the project for after the surface grinder (of which there has been some little progress but .. it seems I have been out of the shop for about 4 months - life).

Piers, this is the auction link:

    http://www.graysonline.com/lot/0313-...ine-b?spr=true

$2099 + 15% buyers premium + $300 to get it craned home and assisted to 'drag' it on a pallet jack across 30 meter of cobbles to the garage. etc. So about $3k so far. Not too bad considering. I had been looking for a few years for the right price and location to crop up. People are asking silly prices these days - whether they are actually selling at those prices who knows. The fact that is was not working meant that it would exclude a bunch of buyers and the site is about 10klms away so I thought this might be my moment to have that punt.

Btw, I only learnt from the ex-staff member about the belt thing after the auction when picking it up - so, as the spindle turned and felt good, I was banking on electrics of a belt or something being the issue.

A top-end rebuild kits of belts and bushes and non-spindle bearings is about $300 US. I'll likely replace the leadscrew nuts and the (non-working) DRO so I guess about $1k in stuff to give it a refresh.

Not cheap, but that means a freshened up 'recent' model Bridgeport for circa $4k. Oh, without power feed - but you can get some cheap-ish if you can stomach a white plastic box hanging off the end of the table.

My Herless SM-1 vertical (knee) mill is a good mill so that'll go when this one is running and offset that cost somewhat.

    Default Nice Vice

    Hi Greg,

That is a nice looking vice, did it come with the mill, do you know what make it is? It looks Swiss/German.

It looks a bit big on the Bridgeport, might be better suited to a Deckel/Maho style mill....

    Cheers

Hi Piers. You mean the viceosaurus. It sure is a lump innit. 90kg. 200mm x 310mm max jaw open. Geez.

I've got it on Gumtree for what I believe is about 40% of new price. It is waaaay to big for my needs so I'm flogging it to recoup some dosh. If anybody here is interested. Cool.

    It is a Safeway mechanical/hydraulic pvh200.

    Come on Piers,

Swiss vices don't look like that, they look like this -

    Greg,

Back in 2010 I bought a book titled " A Guide to Renovating the Bridgeport Series 1 J Head Milling Machine ". 125 heavily illustrated pages with text suitable for the visually impaired. At the time I was Bridgeport tempted, came close to a purchase but was rescued by some of this forum's members. I doubt that I will ever acquire a BP given that I have now come to terms with the restricted work envelope of the 13.

Here is some blurb - https://www.amazon.com/Guide-Renovat.../dp/1482368005

The book is yours as a gift if you want it. If so send me your postal address via a PM.

Many thanks Bob, I'll take it for sure. Much appreciated.

I have one for the South Bend 10L by the same author (SW Wells) and it was very helpful.

    I'll PM you my address.

    Thanks again,

    Greg.
