Surface Grinder Issues 2/10/2018 Kent SGS 1224AHD
I have just recently purchased a Kent SGS 1224AHD surface grinder. So far, I have identified two issues. The cross travel hand wheel won’t budge and the spindle handwheel will lower easily but won’t raise past the original position, which is about half way up the column.
I believe the cross travel problem could be a result of the seller lifting the grinder with a sling around the apron instead of the lifting lugs. The rear of the apron lifted about 6” and has likely bent the threaded rod used for cross travel. My question here is does anyone have details about how to remove the table and the apron so I can assess any damage?
This machine had been out of service for a while and some things seemed to be “frozen” perhaps due to grinding grit. The longitudinal travel moves but does not really glide freely. I have no clue as to why the spindle raising is an issue, so any help here would be appreciated.

Chiplarkin,
I am guessing that you are from Arizona. This is an Aussie based forum; though you guys are more than welcome.
Kent grinders do not appear to be very prolific here; especially on the home workshop front so don't expect a lot of replies.
I have a Jones & Shipman; but have not needed to remove the table. The table only sits on its ways and the only thing fixing it there are the longitudal feed hydraulic rod and the crossfeed screw.
It sounds like your cross feed screw at the least is bent.
With the vertical feed; all I could suggest is to start at the handle and work your way along the left mechanism until you find the frozen part. Being a used machine there will most likely be some wear in the gears/screws /nuts; so anything that is free to move up until the restriction should show some signs of movement.

Thanks Ken. I did notice, just earlier today, that the table just rests on the apron as you said. Once I get help to lift it off, it may reveal something about the cross slide feed. I was able view the feed shaft and it did look straight. Also, good advice on the column. Thanks

I have a Kent KGS200 in Sydney, and I got a manual off the web site.
When I contacted the Taiwan offices directly on the supply of a wheel adapter, I found them helpful and they provided the correct adapter at a reasonable price.
Good luck, the Kent is a good machine.
John.
