Table Saw- new part
G'day All,
The blade-raising mechanism on my table saw failed a few days ago. The brass nut has worn to the point where it now slips on the male screw. It has a left-handed ½" x 13tpi thread. Weird that it's imperial, because it's made in Sweden and the blade tilt has a 16mm ACME threaded screw.
Anyway, I need to make a new one. It's just a 19.7mm diameter x 125mm long piece of brass. Can anyone suggest what type of brass will best suit this application?
Goliath want $152 for a single tap. I found a few used taps on eBay for reasonable prices, but postage was crazy. What's happened to postage from the UK? They want $30 to post a tap! Postage from the USA has always been expensive, but the UK used to be very cheap for small items.Chris

You can get a set of 3 from $37 to $55 including post.
One from Aus $55 or U.K. $37.

Imperial made in Sweden, that is strange, but I guess anything is possible. 13 tpi is suspiciously close to 2mm thread pitch though?

It is close to 2mm, but I checked and the 13tpi gauge is a perfect fit. The 2mm is close, but no cigar.

For what it is do you need to stay with an ACME thread or even brass/bronze? To get up and running again while you are sourcing taps and brass, cobble a temporary fix using 12mm threaded rod and 20mm bright round, keep telling yourself it is only a temporary fix.
Repeat in a year or 4 when temporary fix wears out.

Table Saw- new part
G’day Bob. The part in question is for the blade raising mechanism and is UNC. The ACME thread is on the blade TILT. I only mentioned it to highlight the mixture of metric and imperial. Sorry for the confusion.
While your fix would work it would mean having to rotate the raising handle anti-clockwise to raise the blade. After 27 years of rotating the handle clockwise that would do my head in.

Bob Ward has already hinted at this suggested fix.
Would a LH thread close to the pitch of 13TPI and availble in Australia be a substitution ? Would 0.25mm diference in pitch be a deal breaker?
Theres is a LH 12mm x 1.75 HSS TAP and DIE on ebay for $38 odd free post.

and a M12 x 1.75 x 1 Metre Mild Steel Allthreaded Rod Left Hand Plain $38 odd at Bolts and Industrial Supplies.

Good question Grahame. I don't know.
I have found 1" PB1 bronze locally (George White Metals) for $140/m and they will sell me a short piece. I also found a set of three LH ½" x 13 UNC taps for $55 from LPR Toolmakers. I really only need one, but I can't source a single tap in Oz and postage from OS is prohibitive.
To clarify, here's a pic of the male threaded part.
Edit: correct bronze price.Chris

FWIW that would be my choice, not that I have any special knowledge of the subject. However, if brass is much cheaper, it is probably worth redoing it in brass as a "temporary" measure, since you got 27 years out of the original! Will you still be around in 2045 if you have to replace it again, or will it be someone else's problem?
If it were me I would prefer to keep all sizes standard if possible
Check LPR as a source for L H 1/2" UNC taps. He has carbon steel ones in the catalogue for $46.80 a set. Don't know whether he stocks individual taps in this size - it might be worth asking.
Frank.
Added later: Chris, your last post came up while I was typing this.

Table Saw- new part
Hi Frank. I hope to be around then, but I doubt I’ll still be woodworking! You make a good point about how long the original brass one lasted. In fact, it lasted 34 years. I’m the second owner of the machine.
I contacted LPR and he only sells the LH taps in sets.

Can you post a link please Peter? The only one I found in the UK was a used Dormer for $26 plus $30 postage.

These guys will sell you a 12 x 1.75 LH carbon steel tap for $6.76 posted and the matching die for $5.63 posted. I've used them in the past without disappointment, I have a 3/4" x 10 LH tap and die on the way at the moment, the post can take 2 to 4 weeks.
