    Default richardson drill press

    there are probably many here who have an old richardson drill press like mine ,who have restored them ,my question is the shaft the morse taper of the chuck goes into,can it go further up the outer shaft it runs in,reason is I want to use a mortice kit on it but the shaft is too long ...............bob

    The only other thing you could possibly do is that I believe these also came with a screw on chuck instead of the morse taper socket. So if you found an old drill press you could swap out the entire spindle which should solve your clearance issue. Might be too much trouble though.

    Many years ago I modified a Tough drill, which was similar to a Richardson with the extended shaft, by shortening the complete shaft. This entailed machining the nose down to shift the bottom bearing , extending the splines down the spindle, shifting the top bearing down, then slotting the barrel to get at the ejector slot in the spindle. This is virtually what Waldown did with their drills. The conversion worked very well. Unfortunately I did not take any photo's of the work and when I moved from Perth the drill went to a friend.

    Incidentely, Tough made a drill with a spindle threaded spindle which took a chiselmorticer or a threaded chuck. There was one in the shipwrights workshop in the shipyard, my last workplace.

    hi all anyone got a Picture of the earth screw on handle side with a copper washer ? and a steel screw ? just lost mind whilst restoring
