If you have a look at this video of a Bridgeport top half tear down, at 13:40 sec you will see the back gear compartment is filled with grease. The usual servicing involves scooping out the old grease and re-greasing when re-assembled (which is what I did to my pacific mill). If you were to oil the rear grease nipple, it would just run down and never touch the gears.

    Hi Simon,

Thanks for the link to the video. I didn't see a nipple, in that video, where grease could be injected into that compartment, so I assume that it is at the back of the head. I'll have to make sure that I have a look round the back next time I visit the local engineering shop.
    Best Regards:
    Baron J.

Simon and BaronJ, in that video that Simon linked, at about 10.45 you can see the thread where the grease nipple goes in.
I think these Chinese copies are a fair bit different to a genuine BP mill. In the photo tear down that RC provided in a link, it shows an oil cup and the gallery appears to extend right into the dog clutch. If you look at the earlier photos I posted, the delivery gallery is a lot shorter and lines up with the edge of the big gear, thats why I thought grease?
    Hopefully RC will comment.
    Rgds,
    Crocy.

The video shows a 2J variable speed head. It is a different design to the J step pulley head.

The backgear area on my J head is filled with grease, the only way to add more is dismantle the top of the head. Then there are just two oil cups on the side of the head which you fill daily and just drip through the unsealed spindle bearings.
