Old milling machine
Hi guys,
I have an old milling machine made by Wheeler machinery in Batemans bay and wish to find out some of its history - searches on Google didn't help so I am turning to you to see if any of you know anything, have a tool made by them or whatever- The mill has 2 3 ph. motors running a vertical or horizontal spindle, no power feed but a useful little mill nonetheless.
in anticipation

That is quite a handy unit! Small footprint and fairly tall looking tool-to-table space.
Well done and good luck with research. Have you tried the scanned newspapers on 'Trove'? It is a wonderful online service provided by the National Library of Australia.

The Batemans Bay Historical Society may know something of the company. To me the Wheeler transfer has a 70s vibe.

Also there can't have been many foundries locally to make something such big castings, if any of them are still around they might know something?

old milling machine
Hi guys, thanks to Bob and caskwarrior for their input - have tried Batemans bay historic and trove with no luck although with trove one must be fairly specific with your search - have just fitted a coolant pump and vice to the mill and find it very sturdy when I made some "T' slot bolts for the Beaver - it is such a well made little unit I can't believe it is a "one off"- will try a website tonight for workshop manuals in case one was put together for this mill - I live in hope

old milling machine
Hi guys,
Thanks to andrewOC, Bob ward and cask warrior this thread is finalised - Tried all the suggestions above with no joy - eventually got in touch with the son of the manufacturer Mr. Wheeler whose father manufactured agricultural machinery ex. Sydney and decided before retiring to branch out into milling machines - he was going to make 6 initially but only made one before retiring (mine) amazing what can be achieved through perseverance and educated friends

Wow, now all you need to do is clean it up and give us a few more photos! Certainly if i made a singular milling machine from scratch you better believe it'd be right there in the coffin when I kick it.
