Default Snap rings, circlips, snap ring pliers

I'm working on a Toyota gearbox at the moment and there are several external retaining rings of this style (the large one is 75mm) holding gears and bearings in place. The Toyota gearbox manual calls them snap rings rather than circlips and also refers to snap ring pliers to remove and replace said snap rings.

I'd like to find the proper pliers for these snap rings, even if its only to satisfy my curiosity as to what they look like, ATM I'm using standard circlip pliers, ordinary pliers, screw drivers but its slow and fiddlely and a right PITA.

My google foo must be weak, try as I might all I can find on the net is standard circlip pliers, i.e. the ones designed to work with the retaining rings with the holes in them. Anyone have any thoughts?

Hi Bob, found what you're looking for, here's the link to the picture. I have a pair that I can express post, to you if you can't get hold of a set, PM me if you would like me to post them up, you would have them Friday
I typed in flat blade circlip pliers.
I tried to find one in Repco, and several other sites, to no avail, You might have to make or modify a tool otherwisw

So the secret (to me) words are "flat tip" - that works a treat, thanks guys. Thanks for the kind offer Kryn, I've ordered a pair from your eBay link.

Using the correct tool is always best, but in the past I've modified a couple of smaller (~30mm diam) circlips by drilling small holes near each end for standard style circlip pliers. I was surprised that they drilled quite well just with a good HSS bit
From memory I had looked at replacing the circlips with standard ones, but found the standard ones were a lot thicker so wasn't an option. Application was on idler pulley bearings that I needed to be able to replace in the field.

At a pinch, I'd be inclined to try modifying a pair of normal circlip pliers with a bit of blacksmithing.

    You're welcome Bob.
Nice idea Jordan, but it think you'll find that they're too light a duty to do that too. The circlips Bob's refering to are about twice possibly three times the thickness of normal pinned types.
