In my opinion, as much as one person here doesn’t seem to like hearing it, is you’re absolutely right Grahame. However I think the important thing to remember is that there is no master editor of the internet, and I guess it’s a case of caveat emptor for all readers/viewers. I make that point regularly in regard what somebody may have read on the net, and how that information may not be correct, even sometimes completely wrong. You get the quality of information you have paid for

I regularly use a 9” grinder, often to deep slot to the limit if it’s capacity. That sucker commands respect and a lot of attention in my opinion. I’ve seen chainsaws kick back and the resultant carnage when they met flesh in the process (a guy I know drove himself to the closest medical assistance from his property after a chainsaw accident, only to collapse on the steps when he arrived. He survived, but I saw the blood afterward and it looked like something from a horror movie!). There are often very poor examples of tool use on the internet and, as my dear Mum used to say, it’s all fun and games until somebody loses an eye!

How many listen to that little voice in their head that says you could get hurt, possibly seriously doing this - I believe 99% of people doing a job be it carpentry - cooking - machining - whatever etc will do something or use a tool in an unsafe/dangerous way knowing full well that they should not do that but still go ahead anyway, I know I've done it countless times, stopping a spinning chuck with your hand, wearing loose clothing while using a large rotary wire brush, holding a bronze casting onto a drill press table with just my hand (not even gloves) while trying to drill a hole. We all think it won't happen to us and 99 times out of 100 it's ok, but then that one time brings you back to your senses - for a while, until the next time.

I think we've all done some things in our workshop that weren't safe. I regularly hold pieces by hand when drilling on the pedestal, a left over from when I was healthy and could hang on, but even then I had a rule: the piece had to be long enough for me to wrap two fingers around. May not sound safe, but back then I could do chins with one finger. I never came unstuck - then, now is a different story.. How many faced with a two second job, can't be bothered spending 2 minutes looking for their safety glasses. I'll put my hand up for that one.

Unsafe practices are everywhere, you have to use a little common sense. You see someone backing a caravan up to a wall with their wives standing behind out of sight directing. Do you copy?

When my wife does that (which is all the time) I put the vehicle in park and fold my arms. Eventually she comes up to the window and asks what's going on. I remind her of the consequences and then she's fine - sort of!

I see someone using a snatch strap to remove a bush or tree, I'm not about to copy that!

    Common sense.

Has anyone watched the guy on TV that does radical custom builds of street cars , its on channel 72 I think ?

Anyway, I am watching this guy and he is making a steering rod for one of his creations and he Tig welds a Ford tie rod end adapter on one end and GM tie rod end adapter on the other end. I'm thinking to myself , this guy is totally nuts . Is any of this stuff checked over by a engineer ? Are the welds x-rayed ? He creates his own steering designs ,using a bit of this and a bit of that - out comes the tig and off he goes with welding on a steering box mount to the chassis , critical stuff. He does it all without any drawings" its in my head" he says

I knew a guy that was an expert participant on 'Scrapyard challenge' (or what ever it was called). From the little he said it sounded like there was a good deal more planning and preparation that went into it than 'everyone show up and let's build a _____'. That was a properly budgeted program. There are several rod builders on TV and I must admit that seeing what they cobble together is both interesting and scary. I would hope that their skills are good and all the welds hold but you never get that information.
This I think is the general point that Grahame was making at the start of the thread - people do things and with the rise of Youtube, some of the things done are stupid or should only be done by people with high levels of skill (even though it looks easy on camera), but others are encouraged to copy without necessarily having the background or the knowledge to do the job properly.
I would love to build a custom car or something but apart from the time factor realise that I can't guarantee that the welds I do are 100% (I might get to 95%, but do you trust that on a public road?)

Agree with everything said, these days I dont care what others are doing, as long as I am doing it safetly at home, thats all that matters. 30 years in surface mining with safety rammed down my throat each day I worked has rubbed off onto my partner ( the dragon ), she dont cut the lawn unless she has boots, hearing protection and safety glasses on. I have been a m/cycle rider since 1965, never been without a m/cycle since, I see riders doing the squid thing every summer, shorts and t shirts, their life, their body, as long as I am geared up, dont care what the rest are doing.
