    Default Lathe Chatter

I thought this video may be of interest to some members in regard lathe chatter. It deals with HAAS CNC lathes, but covers some of the principles as to why chatter occurs and what you may be able to do about it. This is where I find having a VFD with continuously variable speed on the lathe is very useful. A lot of the video deals with G-codes etc, but there's still some good information in there in regard nose radius/cutting pressure/rigidity and chuck grip force at high rpm.

    Hi Pete,
Thank you for posting this one. It was another eye-opener.

There seems to be a whole science in itself around the topic of lathe chatter and harmonics.

Many amateur lathe operators might believe that chatter is solely a malady that happens just to them.

Not so, from my own experience in the factories.

It was something I observed in working along side of the fitters and turners when I was on the shop floor. I was always interested in what the fitters were doing and how they set their work up and often asked why they did it in a particular way. What I learned has helped me these days with improving my own lathe work.

Being in the refinery the machinists had to deal with some long and other very hard materials which would squeal when worked with a tool. Thier lathe tools while carbide, of the type braised onto a shank. The noise from the tool was somethimes strong enough to make it very uncomfortable to be near the maching operation.

I can remember one bloke who wrapped some sheet lead around the non-cutting part of the tool. I never found out if it was effective as it was the day I was due for leave and the machinist in question had retired while I was away. I surmised it was intended to reduce the tool vibration.

    From what I remember.
    Tool stick out
    The material
    The lathe tool angle
    and
The RPM s of the work seemed to play a part.

Also a good while back on the forum ,we talked about the belts and how segmented belts were used in reducing not chatter, but harmonics and surface finish.
    Can anyone recall that?

    Grahame
