A little (controlled) slip is not a bad thing as it helps keep the tube from being stretched too much in one place and yielding. Having said that, when I made my tube bender, I had to make up a clamp like that although mine was 4 or 5 diameters long.
I worked in a place that had CNC tube benders and the amount of grip was one of those things that was a variable. Typically we would start with a tube and mark it up in say 100mm increments*. It would then be bent by the machine and we could use those markings to determine where the bends 'really were' and adjust the program to suit. Once you had adjusted for slip and stretch the results would be very consistant (until the temper of the tube changed...)

*That was one method. One place had a computerised measuring system that could determine the tube shape after using a touch probe on it. Other places relied on profile jigs with shims to measure the deviation from 'true'.

Interesting to know about some slip possibly helping things, thanks Michael.
Without the luxury of fine CNC control and predictable grip, keeping the tube in a known fixed position is the best I can do I think.

Variability of tube condition and shape (not necessarily round at every point) are things I've discovered with the tube we're using.
