    Default Nobody wants my money

    I have tried 3 different sellers of Jones & Shipman surface grinder wheel adapters.

    Taiwan Tools keeps showing my joining member application as an error. Can't start a membership to place an order.

    Tried England next-- twice.

    Jubilee Machine Tools tries to hit me with 100% VAT and then the site refuses to allow me to contact them.

    Andmar shows my items are in stock and lets me place some items in my basket. Checkout then shows item N/A and a $0.00 value. Got no further there either.

    Funny thing is that every other scumbag in the world is trying to scam me.

    Business must be booming overseas if they don't want to take orders.

    Strange.

    How much are the adapters? I only have one for my 540.

    Taiwan Tool $175 AU
    Jubilee Machine $197AU. + their famous 100% VAT. (site actually states 20% for Britain & Europe)
    Andmar, site will not give a price for any of their J&S parts.

    I haven't tried them yet as there was a report here a short while ago where a member could not get a response from them by email.

    they certainly are pricey suckers. I have a couple which came with the machine. One has had the balance weights removed from the front circular dovetail and I can see no way of fitting replacements to the groove. The other has had the entire balancing section machined off.

    If you are talking about wheel hubs, they are not difficult things to make once you have the method sussed out.

    I would not worry too much about the balance weights. Phil (Machtool) was saying that modern wheel manufacture is good enough that you don't really need them, and the limited use I've made of mine would suggest that he is right.

    Yes wheel hubs. I need to be able to balance a Norton 2SG semi ceramic wheel. It is out of balance and certainly shows in the work. The out of balance Norton wheels are a common problem apparently and there has been numerous discussions over on PM. My white aluminium oxide 38A wheel has no balance problems.

    And the result. D2 steel about 275mm long, 46grit Norton 3SG wheel, five final passes of 0.00001" then sparkout passes. Auto feeds. Flood coolant.

    Ist pic of blue wheel also shows the hub adapter which has had the 3 balance weights removed from the wheel nut.
    2nd pic of the alox wheel shows the wheel nut where the outer edge of the dovetail groove has been removed.
    4th pic was a hard one to get. I had to take it out in the sun hence the glare, to try and display the "tiger stripes"/wheel hop patterning.

    I have seen weights that were split and fixed by clamping it in the groove by turning a setscrew between the two halves. That should work for you. I can't remember how the original j&s are. I will see if I can produce a picture of the split one if I get to the workshop later this week.

    Thank you for that. On photos of new units some of them show a very fine slit on the centre line of the weight; through the threaded hole then continue on for a distance, How they fit them into the dovetail has me baffled. All very good to make the superfine slit if you have a laser cutter. May be two rings of brass with outside dovetail shape; soft soldered together then drilled and tapped around the centre join, then cut to length, desoldered and reassembled in the dovetail.

    The adapters are not difficult to make. The most difficult part is a nice fit on the taper, but once they blue up nice make multiples. I personally made a reference one to use as a test fit on the lathe, so no need to remove it an go back and forth.

    You can just drill and tap in a circular pattern on one of the flanges. Use grub screws as weights. Shorter ones or longer ones to adjust the weight on the same spot if you want something "in-between". Just be careful not to screw them into the wheel if they are through holes. If worried you can use a drop of glue.

    Hi Ken, pending other input on the balance weights, attached are photos of what I have on one of the 540 arbors, they are semi split and have to be jimmied to get them out of the balance weight area. As can be seen the top surface springs to accomplish this and on the underside its V out. Not sure how many times this can be done without breaking the skin. On another arbor I have they are actually split with the outer edges of track where the balance weights sit is slightly tapered. I suspect the latter is of a newer design.     Thanks for that. I can see the idea from the photos. Removing and refitting certainly or maybe tight grubscrews certainly stress the back of the centre groove.
