Keyless chucks
Hi all, just unpacked my new hafco drill press yesterday, overall not a bad machine and after a few tweaks it will do the job well. However the same can't be said about the chuck supplied, absolute garbage!
Any reccomendations for somewhere to buy a vertex or similar quality keyless chuck online, or the north coast of tasmania? Any help will be greatly appreciated, Matt

Hi Matt,
What are the problems/defects with this keyless chuck that make you say it is garbage. What was the DP model?
Do you think for what you have spent, that the level of keyless chuck supplied, should have been far better?
Have you been in contact with the Hafco about this problem ?. Just a bit of caution here, as there are some rules in the TOU about name and shame.?
Sometimes it is just a matter of a replacement, possibly with a better value keyless chuck.
I the above was not suitable here are some links

Gday Grahame, it's a pd 510 hafco by hare and Forbes, overall a great machine and I'm very happy with it, especially for the money. I am mainly looking for a keyless chuck to replace the keyed chuck supplied for convenience, and the one supplied has quite a lot of runout(a common fault with most supplied chucks I'm told) So basically I'm just asking for some options from other members as to what they have chosen as alternatives. Thanks for the links too, that has given me some good options!

Yeah the keyed jacobs style chucks that come with the HAFCO imports are absolute garbage. I mangled way too many drill shanks and reamed too many oversize holes with that trash thinking I could make it work.
As I always say about the HAFCO tools: no, expense spared.

Yeah I guess so precious mettle, but they are built to an affordable price, as much as I would have loved to buy a brobo press, between keeping food on the table and roof over my family's heads I feel lucky to have the spare cash to indulge in toys for the shed haha. Do you have any recommendations for a chuck to suit my machine, thanks mate

Do you know what taper is on the machine arbor? You'll need to know. If its threaded that will really refute your options but i would imagine its a b16 or Jacobs taper. I dont know anyone in tassie who could help but there was a guy in gumtree in Melbourne who had new Rohm keyless chucks for 90 bucks i bought a couple and they are solid.

Hi Matt
Have you checked the spindle run out on the new machine ? It is a good place to start from.
It is no good replacing the chuck if the spindle is not running true. I have no idea what the standard maximum is, but I reckon the boys will chime in with a figure.

Will check that tomorrow when I get my dial indicator from work, I'll be happy if the spindle is running a few thou out of true, again it's only a drill press. Thanks for everyone's input. It runs a Mt 4 taper so there is a number of options available in terms of chucks/arbours
