'B' Section Link Belts
Are they as good as the marketing claims and does anybody know where to find them at a decent price?
I'm getting a lot of vibration from the stiff old headstock drive belt on my lathe, it's time to replace it and I don't really want to pull the lathe apart if I can avoid it.

Never had a problem with link belts, and they're certainly worth pursuing for final drive on a lathe to save pulling the spindle. Quality link belt is however sickeningly expensive. An available local source of B section link belt is Blackwoods (P/N 09858017), but it's $150 a meter. Can be had a lot cheaper from overseas if you look.

Thanks for the lead caskwarrior, I'm traveling over that way early next year, will look into it.
Edit: I've added a link to G & R Industrial Products to assist anyone else looking for leather link belt

The stuff's not cheap here for some reason don't know why so I have ordered some of this from the UK
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Megadyne...VQeaPjjUoE0LYA
A 1 metre length 36 UK Pounds or approx $AU64 inc shipping. The Nut-link or Brammer type which has the rivets in it is also available for a similar price but I have heard the Power Twist type is better.

Its called the "Australia Tax". Non Government and Unofficial.
I was recently looking for something and found it on the RS components UK site. The price over there was equal to about $9 aus. The exact same part (the only thing different on the webpage was the location and price) from RS components in Australia was over $22 + gst. This was on something made in china so they probably couldn't use the "its so far to transport to Australia" argument.
I'm sure just about everyone here could relate a similar story.

My linked belt arrived today, took all of around 5 min to install - old belt cam off with a sharp knife. Not sure what the new belt is made of but it is quite stiff, once sized I had a few links left over. The lathe does not run quieter but it is smoother, I had a couple of bad vibrations that used to shake the worklight, I worked out the approx revs this happened and just avoided them. The old vibration has gone but I have noticed a new vibration at different revs, however it is so slight it barely moves the worklight. 20171207_210142.jpg20171207_210122.jpg

I finally picked up some link belt to replace the old, worn out vee belt driving my lathes spindle, I didn't consider that there wouldn't be enough clearance between the large pulley and the casting to slip the new belt on, bugger!
I think I'll just scrape the casting until there's enough room to slip the belt into position.

Does anybody have an example of a scraper made from a file I can copy? I need to know what shape to grind, bevel angle etc
Thanks,
Ben

Looking at your photo there appears to be quite a bit of material that needs to be removed for clearance, have you consider using a rotary bur for material removal.

Yeah pipeclay, there's a bit of material to remove but I don't have a rotary burr and my air compressor is too small to supply air to my die grinder (and it's too bulky to reach anyway)
I thought if I take my time scraping I would eventually get there

By the time you remove enough metal to clear the belt you'd almost be through to the other side anyway, why not just drill two large holes and cut out the aluminium between with a jig saw. At least it might look reasonable.
What lathe is that? Same setup as the AL-300 under the hood.

Why not just bite the bullet, pull the spindle out, and fit a new proper belt? Its not such a big or difficult job. I did mine some time ago now. Cant remember how long it took but I can't remember there being any real dramas.

its a link belt, cant you just decouple it. feed the end down around the pulley, and join it again further around?
