Form turning method
I was looking at these methods described for form turning and wondering if all of them would be successful ? The spring loaded tool would chatter maybe ?

How about this.
Minimise the overhang by holding the tool very securely. Dont allow it to move.
Instead of a spring either
1. Place a dial indicator between the toolpost and the profile template try to hold the indicator to the same reading all the time. (seen on MEW forum)
or
2. Maybe spring isn't needed ? Use a solid bar with an appropriately shaped end to trace the profile, one end of the solid bar connected to toolpost the other end traces the shape.
When trying to do this sort of thing on chess pieces I had a lot of trouble with the shape of the "tracing tool". Need to do some more testing & learning.

the chatter . i think depends on the width of tool compaired to depth of cut.
thats an interesting link.
i all ways thought form tools were ground to match the shape of the profile required.
