A cobalt Drill set weighs about 1kg so the web site says. And although a 1Kg prepaid satchel from Aussie Post is about $11.00 I expect that with some extra packing to prevent contents breaking out of a bag, a 3kg satchel (about $14.00) would be more the go.

Yes, not overly expensive for a single item.

However, each time you add an item it adds the full cost of the shipping per item, again and again.

So in your example of the Cobalt drills, for 1X it is $15, if you had bought three the freight would have been $45.

How would you feel about a $45 shipping charge for 3 boxes of drills?

You would think he would combine the postage costs? Have you asked?

There is a cost in the packaging of the goods, material and labour, plus Australia Post May charge for picking up from the warehouse. A lot of places work on about $1.50 a minute, so someone has to pick the goods, then wrap, pack and label, it all takes time which equals money.

Sure Kryn, but it doesn't take three times as long to pack three packets of drill bits as it does to do one packet.

I spoke to Felix yesterday at length and reported that there was some discussion here about postage. He's working on getting a better deal with both TNT and Australia Post. He also said that postage varies so much across Australia that it is difficult to set a postage price. He's working on setting up a better calculator for the website as well.
Just get in touch with him to negotiate a better deal - both tools and postage. He is very approachable as I said before.

NB: ER32 12-sided collet blocks will be available soon! Order for manufacture placed...

I'm not trying to be negative here, but I've only bought one item from M&G: a set of ER32 collets. Promised runout of 0.015mm.

Sadly, the runout was more like 0.08-0.12mm, around 0.1mm on average. They were as bad as some old cheapo EBay individual collets I had. That's awful. You could see the runout on most of the collets with your eye.

Specifically, the runout of the 10mm collet was 0.09mm+. That's measured with a *very good* 10mm ground pin in a Vertex collet chuck on my SX-4 mill. For comparison, the same setup with a Vertex ER32 collet results in a runout that's barely visible on a 0.01 DTI. The Vertex collets are $40 each, but they're worth it: when I need a size I haven't used before I buy it and throw the M&G one in the scrap bin.

That experience soured me. I won't buy from M&G again. Why bother when I could have bought the same collet set for 1/3 price from China? That collet set only gets used for holding drills now, that's all it's good for.

Did you contact M&G and let them know?
A. Because if it's not what it's advertised as you have rights around that.
B. If they don't know there's a quality issue then it makes it hard for them to fix it.

Since you've suffered along with a crap set of collets I'm guessing you didn't contact them.

Nope. My experience has been that service and product have a linear and directly proportional relationship. I just didn't want to go through the hassle it would probably involve, given that it would probably cost me $20 to post them back and then the arguments about the product. That might be unfair as I didn't give them the chance, but I didn't want the hassle. It might be they would have gracefully refunded and apologised, but I just didn't bother, and won't ever buy from them again. I should add that I contacted them before the purchase and asked if the collets would *really* meet that spec, and he assured me that they are QC'd to spec.

I took it as a lesson. That was the last no-name junk I bought. Today I just got a new keyless chuck for my lathe tailstock - bought a Vertex MT3-J6 arbour and a Vertex J6 chuck from General Tools in Adelaide. $115 including shipping but I know that will run like a charm, and General shipped it 2 hours after I ordered it (Aus Post show they got it). There's that linear product-service quality relationship again.
