Default I can’t do a bad weld if I try.

As the title says...I can’t do a bad weld if I try....not sure I can do a good one either, for that matter.

I saw these amazing sculptures while I was away and I thought I could try it as a technique in my work. Bird welds happen when I don’t want them so I should be able to do this......well not when I try.

I have a small mig and old arc welder both 240v home size units.

    Any suggestions?

Not sure how that would be done. Metal spray perhaps?

When in the industry we did a lot of peening seen on top of the leaves, done with a ball pein and anvil. Having said that, under magnification the peening is ver uniform so possibly done with a machine, a jig or a very accurate hammer man The underside just looks like spots of weld. That wouldn't take long, would it?

    Brilliantly done though.

Here’s where I went with my attempt today.

I used mug with no gas. I think it would look better with thinner if wire.

I like the concept but not happy with the results yet. While it was hot I melted in some copper accents.

I had to make a dishing stump before I started.

I'd use a stick on low amps.

It could be 3d printed with laser sintering.

If I was trying to recreate the effect in the first picture, I'd probably try a mig with voltage set way too low, and wire feed cranked up? Should get somewhere near the result - maybe...

A lovely squid jig for a bit of night fishing

Seriously, that beading effect occurs in the lower end of the short arc range of mig. The setting (??) can be tweaked to get that blob ball effect. It requires a trigger pull, then a quick release.yep! no gas either.

I doubt it. It would cost about $3000 if it was.

It could have been done by that hardfacing method of putting grit tungsten carbide in the metal. Although I imagine the cost would mean it was not done that way.
