    Default Starret 196 - the shaper's friend

Recently on Steve Summers Youtube channel:

    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjr...N0ac8aVejwPBvA

(check him out- he does a lot of shaper work, I was subscriber #56)

He mentioned the Starrett 196 set as being a good shaper dial. I got a vintage one in from the US last year and I agree. Very handy indeed. Cost $50 US.

    Apols for low light pics.

I got one for the back-plunger usage and the bore measuring arm ... and also coz they're gorgeous. )

Comments and comparisons with other kits welcome.

    Greg.

I made a holder for mine and use it for tramming the mill. The back plunger button makes it so much easier.

I have a Lufkin clone of the indicator, (actually made by Ames i think) and its certainly handy I like it a lot more than my mitutoyo one simply because its a lot more compact ( takes up less z )

A very generous person on this forum by the name of Michael G. gifted me one of these after I picked up a Repco SG for him.

It would have to be one of the most used measurement tools I use. They are beautifully made. +1 using it to tram the mill head and other stuff like aligning the mill vice when needed.

They are the one Starrett item I would really like.

Simon, +1 on both counts. Handy item, and MichaelG being a good soul.

Shed, nice unit. Also those planer gauges are sure sweet looking things. Dunno what I might use one for though!

(and being totally and deliberately out of touch with most things ... I have no idea what a cokeroid is! ....)

That damned Michael G again - making the rest of us Michael G's look bad...

(I should point out that Simon drove for a considerable distance with trailer, picked up the grinder, took it home and packed it up and then drove another considerable distance to drop the whole thing off at a transport depot. Not just a quick trip around the corner...)

Do it again anytime Michael. The least i could do. The Starrett was both a surprise AND much appreciated.

    Cheers.

B&S make one in metric. I also have a Mitutoyo in metric with a slightly different button.
