Old Standaco lathe missing a gear
Hi Folks
I am very new to lathework so please forgive any incorrect terminology.
I have just acquired a Standaco lathe, model unknown. It is missing a small gear that from what I can see, allows the autofeed to work.
Does anyone have any suggestions on where / who I may obtain such a gear?
I have emailed Standaco in Melbourne with no reply.
A couple of pics are below. Sorry I can't rotate them
Thanks in advance
Ash

The name of that gear is one of the two tumbler reverse gears, the missing one may have a slightly different numb er of teeth to the one that remains. That lathe looks very much like one badged 'lantaine' or 'lantain' and sold under a lot of other names. searching under that may help more.

Another place to try for spares would be Hare and Forbes. Being a pretty standard Taiwanese lathe, they may have the part or a suitable substitute. The alternative is to make one up but for that a bit more information is required.

Nobody answers emails, ring their parts division and ask if they have the gear, can get it or know how many teeth. You may be able to source one on ebay, if not Hafco may have something to fit, else you could have one made.

Hi Michael. What model should I quote if I call them? I believe it is similar, if not identical to a Honden L-900B, just by looking at photos on the net. All very new to me.

Hi sacc51. My problem is that I don't know what model it is and what specific part I need.

Hi caskwarrior. I have searched quite a bit and found it to look very very similar to the Honden L-900B. Fingers crossed I may find the missing gear. Thanks for you guidance.

I'd be saying that it is an older Taiwanese lathe with quick change gear box and give them the swing and between centres length, offer to send a photo. They would have sold 100's of these or variations of them, even if they are no longer currently produced and be able to quickly work out the model you mean. The one that I had was a P4 Dai-shin lathe; should be something like a 9"x20" or possibly a 7"x20" machine.

Hi Ash
Standaco were importing their machinery and putting their name on them. The old guy that used to be there was really helpful but he retired some years ago.
The missing gear is almost certainly the same as its pair as otherwise the speeds between forward and reverse will be different.
Hafco will help if you can give them the exact model of a lathe thay they sold otherwise my experience is that they dont want to know.
I bought my lathe from Herless before Hafco took them over and I had to establish which of the hafco lathes was the same as mine before I was able to get parts.

I have a scan of a users manual for a Lantaine LAM350-B and this picture does look very similar in layout and it looks like the missing gear is slightly bigger but it is a really grainy horrible thing so not enough detail to count teeth.
Lantaine.jpg
The scan of the users guide is 7.5MB so drop me a PM with an email and I can send it to you if want it?

Take a guess at the number of teeth, print out a paper template and see if it fits. Next step is to 3d print a 3mm thick template to confirm operation. Then print or cut a gear. For tumblers Delrin works fine, my 1939 lathe has had a delrin tumbler in service for years. I cut my tumbler with a hand made single point tool and a gear cutting jig I can share.

Yeah the idler gear doesn't change the final ratio, only the direction. Only the first and last are count. Check that gap between the gear on the spindle and the bottom, you might be able to get someone to make one if worse comes to worst.
Is it Standaco S1237BG?

I have a Lantaine-based lathe. On mine the front tumbler is 20T and the rear is 25T. I worked out the pitch once but I've forgotten. 12DP rings a bell.
