Misterry metal
Recently I obtained from the local classified a piece of 5" round stock. The seller advertised it as 4140 but I think it is some kind of a cast iron because it turns everything black. It is fairly soft and machines nicely. Also, I was able to flame harden it. The chips are dull gray and curly. The end of the rod has a marking painted on it: dark blue with a white stripe in the middle. Can anybody guess what it might be?
Thanks,
- George

Welcome to the forum,
Cast iron will machine as chips ,not curly.
Australian colour coding Id this as annealed 4140 DCF.
Bear in mind every steel manufacturer seems to have their own colour code system, so what is correct for Australia may not be for your neck of the woods.
