Square Hollow Section Strength/Deflection charts in Metric?
Hi All, does anyone know of any online calculators or charts showing the strength or amount of delfection for different sizes and thicknesses of Square Section SHS Steel in Metric?
I am in the process of building a small cart that I need to keep as low as possible, I am trying to figure out if I can use smaller but thicker sections to mimimise height.
ie if I go from 30mm x 2.5mm SHS to 20mm SHS how thick would it need to be to deflect the same.
Thanks
Joe

For beam deflection to be equal, area moment of inertia of the two beams must be equal. You need to use an area moment of inertia (also called second moment of area) calculator.
But just plugging in some numbers, I can tell you that even 20mm solid bar (~13,500 mm^4) will in the simple case, deflect 3x more than a 30x2.5 square section (~35,000 mm^4). The question is, will your loading case be significant enough for deflection to be significant enough to worry about it?

That calculator page for engineers has a web page hijacker in it some place saying it's a virus infection . Get rid of that link mate.
The volume of a pizza of thickness 'a' and radius 'z' is given by pi z z a.

Links gone, iPhone, iPad, notebook and firewall with realtime scanner didn't detect anything though.

It's not an actual virus on that site like the voice over says it's a browser hijacker that will probably direct you to a site with malware on it.
Check your browsers home page address and see if it changed from what you normally use . It pretends to be a Windows defender announcement as far as I could tell . My scans came up clear also .The volume of a pizza of thickness 'a' and radius 'z' is given by pi z z a.

Hi Guys,
May be I should mention that I don't use Winblows at all, I'm a Linux user ! So virus and other nasties don't bother me. Annoyingly Android, which is a Linux variant seems to suffer more, probably because of the data collection methods that Google have built in. It is as big a spy, if not worse than M$.Best Regards:

I would say a much worse spy. When I turned on the GPS function on my phone it said I had to agree to my location being tracked and sent to Google. I said no and have still never used the GPS function. I have a GPS for that, which is incapable of sending any data. Heard about the popular robot home vacuum cleaner that is going to create home plans and send them back to the maker for onselling. From what I have read there will be a lot available second hand soon.

Hi Dean, Guys,
Unfortunately the internet and the advent of mobile computing has made data collection very common and very easy to do. Note the "IOT" (Internet of Things) ! Even my motor vehicle spies on me. The built in sat nav records wherever I go whether it's in use or not. My speed is also monitored, as is when a locked door is opened, particularly from the inside and the key is not in the ignition.
Not long after I bought the vehicle, I started having problems with the battery becoming discharged after being stood for a fortnight. Enough so that the engine wouldn't crank but not enough for the electronics to stop working or the intrusion detection alarm to go off, requiring the key to unlock the door.
As part of trying to find out what was causing the battery drain, I disconnected it and charged it up before re-connecting it and measuring the current draw. Only to have the intrusion alarm go off and the siren to start sounding. Not being able to discover what was causing the current drain, after trying over several months, I took the vehicle to a main dealer who promptly told me that the battery was knackered and it was going to cost me £275 to have it replaced.
I'm sure that you can imagine my indignation and after putting the dealer's electrical foreman in his place, I left, refusing to pay the £70 that they demanded.
I then happened to get to chatting with one of their customers who suggested that I try a different main dealer and gave me a phone number and a name. A really nice guy who by chance had been employed at one time by my son. He advised me to phone the sat nav company and explain the problem to them. They took the vehicle details and within two hours rang me back to tell me that the problem was that the tracker software had become corrupted and was phoning home every ten minutes instead of each time the vehicle was driven. They reprogrammed the tracker remotely and arranged for the rest of the vehicle software to be updated.Best Regards:
