Goldcoast scraping & machine rebuilding club
Just to update I've paid and placed my order for a 2000mmx1000mmx220mm plate and if anyone wants to also order a plate regardless of size it'll be $400 cheaper if you contact Redmond Gary and add your plate to my order so they can be shipped at the same time.
so far we have my Biax which I'll be finally getting back next week along with my three camelbacks. To add to this andrew found a retired swiss machine rebuilder in brisbane who's quite ill and managed to buy his entire collection which includes every size straight edge, square, levels, parallels, hand scraping tools etc you can imagine plus the Biax which andy is keeping. Andy organized and fronted the money for that particular score and I'll be paying him back so it can all be used by the club (under supervision of course).
there's also a gentleman not far south who's number I forgot to grab but he's just started getting into his scraping as well and already owns a Biax as well as a few other bits of scraping kit. he's currently building a smoker and we'll probably have a few BBQ days over the weekends to meet up and get things rolling. I don't eat meat for medical reasons but I'm happy to supply a heap of steaks and snags plus a few cartons of Coopers for the first meetup.
once we get everyone together we'll need to discuss insurance and how we want to go about it (possibly setting things up through the men's shed association) but we'll explore our options when it comes to it. Looking to have the membership as cheap as possible just to cover the insurance and little things like canode/prussian blue. more probably just a small fee per scraping day/afternoon and also looking to waive fees for people who help set up the factory and help get things off the ground.
The only other piece of kit we're looking to buy is a smaller surface plate with 4-5 different sized holes bored through the corners/center which will be used to scrape the bottom of lathe compound slides and a grinder set up with some bondo wheels for grinding and honing the scraper blades. will post some pics tonight of the kit so far once I knock off for the day.

Good on you for setting this up. Pity something like this isn't in SA.
Anyone in SA interested in setting up a similar thing????

two of the camel backs I picked up on my trip to sydney, Excuse the knife edge camelback being stored on its flat against the steel bookshelf, it definitely needs some scraping and never came with a wooden base so I'm not fussed and will have Woody make a case for it once its scraped in.

a large portion of Andy's score, all the wooden cases have been made specifically for the masters which are all scraped beautiful still caked in the original Prussian blue and wrapped in waxed paper. huge variety of different shape masters two I was a little iffy on. one being a section of heavy Angle welded to flat bar and the other is a section of railroad track, both are scraped but it just seemed strange to be using steel as a master, everything else is cast iron.

the 8" master square with level from andy's score, beautifully scraped in with basically no signs of use accurate to 0.02mm over 1 meter alongside two matching sets of 30mm x 40mm lapped parallels that look immaculate.

the picture is actually from the auction listing because I forget to get a picture but the huge 72" brown and sharpe camelback in the pic is one I bought in Sydney. was never actually used and still had its protective wax on the flat or maybe it was just a perfectly even layer of brown grime, kind of hard to tell.

not pictured is quite a few bits of kit including the pull and push scrapers along with our Biaxs. Although I've managed to clear most of the factory I still have one more room on the mezzanine to clear that's housing all the belongings of a good friend of mine. he was paying a weekly fee to store it all but hasn't done so in a month so I'm having him clear it all out so we'll have a dedicated room solely to store all the scraping masters, levels, biaxs and fine instruments. it has an air conditioner fitted as well so if we're really feeling crazy we can have it as a temperature controlled room.

How much were the 900 x 600s?
These would be adequate for 1m lathes and brigeport clones yeah?

The 0.02mm/m box level will not be very useful used as a level. It is just way too sensitive. You really just want to concentrate on around that 0.05mm/m to 0.04mm/m sensitivity.
Since you seem really keen, I will donate a 0.0003"/ft Gier and Bluhm vial to the cause. I seem to have four of them here and people here generously helped me out with the slideway grinder, so I will pass on their generosity. Also if your group needs any slideway grinding done I could probably do it at the same rate I seem to get paid here.
PM me a postal address to send it to.Gold, the colour of choice for the discerning person.

Loving your enthusiasm. You have amassed an amazing amount of scraping paraphernalia in a very short time. Unfortunately I'm too far away to be involved but looking forward to following your work. Please document any projects on the forum.
cheers

we will definitely have to organize a trip up to visit once we're settled in and much appreciated, that level would surely go a long way. can I send you up anything in return?
They actually only sell a size above and below that, either a 800 x 500 or 1000 x 630 I already asked him to get a price on them when I went in and ordered my plate and should know by monday. chances are its going to be pretty dam cheap, once you know if you're keen you just need to go into the redmond gary office or call and order it
