I always place my pictures onto the forum servers ! And I've always got a copy on my machine plus the backups. I've never quite trusted third parties to keep them safe, and the Photobucket fiasco is diabolical rip off. No way would I pay them any money ! There are a number of other free photo hosting sites around if that is what you prefer. I also suspect that somewhere down the line the pictures will get sold on...

If all you're doing is facing that piece for surface finish, not bulk material removal, try using a vertical shear tool. It's a 5 minute grind from hss and with the right speeds and feeds can produce an amazing finish. I don't like the look of that tool you posted. It just doesn't look right, nor particularly sharp.

This little book describes the shaper tools in detail, its an oldie but a goodie . The book has drawings of the correct shaper tool holders , they are hook shaped in order to place the tool tip behind the centre line . The book is easy to find on ABE books .

Baron, thanks, yep - I know. It was only two threads that I did that I specifically embedded the pics so they would be large and not attachments. Such is life.

Mettle, I thought it **was** a shear tool! ) That made me laugh! Righto. I'll look again at the books I have. Morrisman, thanks. That is one of the books I have! I tracked it down after finding the name 'duplex' cropping up all over. Gear cutting on a shaper etc etc.

A note here. I've not gone back to make anything flat with the shaper since but I have put my newly made slotting attachment into action (the workpiece shown in the OP was for that). I noticed the gibs on the downfeed had a lot of play in them. Adjusted now. That is suspect nr one for now. Suspect nr two is vice-osaurus - it ain't that stable. I'll be making some tnuts as an learning/debugging exercise in the coming weeks and will report back what I find.
