SIP 8P jig borer
Some of you may be aware that the Australian defence department recently sold off some of there older equipment to make room for some modernisation. One of the machines they sold was a pristine SIP 8P jig borer/milling machine. Unfortunately I was the losing bidder on this machine. To me this is the ultimate pre NC/CNC milling machine so I wanted to document it here.
This is the largest of the SIP jig borers. Although it is a big machine coming in at 17 tonnes it has been built to the same high level of accuracy as SIPs smaller jig borers. It uses the Hydroptic system with hydraulic movement and optical positioning. So no screws to wear. As such it is capable of reasonably heavy cuts while maintaining extreme accuracy. Its positional accuracy is guaranteed at 5 microns. It has both vertical and horizontal spindles with 12 inch travel. Spindle concentricity 2 microns or less. This machine was also equipped with DRO and had a large amount of high end accessories with it. 3 matrix compound sine tables, 3 rotary tables ( including 800mm automatic table), and pretty much every original SIP accessory in the SIP cabinets that was available.
It sold extremely cheaply at around $9000 including GST/BP. The problems were it was located in a defence research facility in central Melbourne with access restrictions, in its own climate controlled room (which would need dismantling to remove) and was an oversize load that would need to be moved through central melbourne. Cost of removal would be close to purchase price and thats doing most of the work yourself. So probably $15-20000 landed at home. Then you need somewhere to put it! It went to someone at Thornbury in Melbourne. If anyone got to see it at the inspection day or knows where it ended up I would love to hear from them.

No where in the league of that one - and auction pics worse than Grays if that's possible too - but see there's a 6 and a 7 coming up for sale out of SA - with a generous 6 month collection period. Constructing a temp controlled annexe for that shed out of thermopanel might be a good idea after all!

Good luck Mark. Pity, looks like all the accessories are scattered elsewhere or have gone walkabout through the employee car park.
Anthony, sorry, your inbox is full, but expect this will be a pita auction and most of the stuff on offer isn't home workshop size anyway so no great secret.

Thanks Bill. I’ve never seen that site before. I will have a poke around. There are a lot of auctions on at the moment. Not many with tool room gear. It makes me wonder where it’s going. I know of some complete lots that were shipped to India. I wonder if that’s happening on a larger scale than one might expect.

I bought that machine. What can I say, I needed a drill press and it looked cool!
Well, then I woke up. That's a very impressive machine.
SimonGirl, I don't wanna know about your mild-mannered alter ego or anything like that." I mean, you tell me you're, uh, super-mega-ultra-lightning babe? That's all right with me. I'm good. I'm good.
